Someones telling you stories!
The Cuda has the most durable gears out there. HPI and Tamiya owners have come on here wondering if our diffs will fit in their cars
Now if you don't shim the diff correctly just like any car you will strip gears- that's why the car comes with shims so that you set it just right.

Does the r3 need diff covers. Does dirt and grim get in them. And if so will the r2 diff covers fit the r3.

Doug

was wondering the same thing. I have the R2 cover but doubt that it will be a perfect fit without modifying.
I suppose cover needed only if I run at dirty track, so far no problem with gear getting dirt on my R3.

AWOLsoldier: Do you still have the sparkle carbon fiber that you used to make your setup board? I might be hitting you up for one if you don't mind.

whoever told you that is definitely wrong. i have an R3.. ive run it in stock, 19T and mod (9x1)...and the only time i stripped a gear was when i got nailed at the end of the straight using a mod motor.

you cant go wrong with gears for the cuda.. they have some if not the fattest strongest gears around.

That would be kool. How thick is the material and how does it do for a setup board? Does it stay flat and true?

Would it be wise to buy the r3 now since its on special or just wait till the new chassis comes out. Also does anyone run the r3 on asphalt and have any trouble with gettin dirt int the diff gears.

The R2 is basically the same as the R3 as far as running on asphalt. I've just started leaving my gear covers off and have been satisfied with the exposed gear box so far. It is scary looking seeing all of the gears exposed but so far so good and the car looks more exotic without the gear covers . All I run on is temporary parking lot tracks so you have to expect the occasional rocks and debris on these surfaces. The best thing to do is avoid running out of line and out into the marbles and maybe just cut a peice of lexan to cover the top opening only over the gear boxes. The other thing to do is not over lube the diff balls with grease- this will leach out and attract grime to the diff gear. To be honest i catch more sand debris in my spur gear than the drive gears.

I also run my gear boxes exposed (and i do race outdoors occasionally as well) and I don't remember ever have to replace the gears. After a day of racing you might want to "floss" the teeth (take the back side of an X-acto and clean out anything between the teeth) and you'll be good to go for the next race
