Was there a time when you could buy 6 volt lead acid (gel?) battery packs for RC cars? Like around the mid 80's? I could swear I had one for my first Tamiya car and it was higher capacity than the old nicad hump packs for Tamiya's, but lower voltage.

I have only seen them in scale boats like the ones made by Dumas. I don't recall any made for the car market??

There was an old one that was specifically made for the Bruiser and I think the Tanks back then..I thought they were NiCd though, not lead acid but not sure.

Yup, they were out there. I do not know the exact time frame. I had an extreme old school car. About the size of an 1/8. Had hard solid rubber tires, fiberglass body, ancient radio system. also had lead acid battery power you were talking about.
I would place it around late 70s to early eighties.
