is it possible to make the electric on-road cars switch gears like the nitro ones?

Thatīs not much of a problem, even with the same princip as the nitro-cars, but not legal in any electric class.

They have been made before for electric but they never seem to work well. The biggest problem is when it shifts, it almost stalls out the motor at full power. This causes a ton of arcing between the comm and brushes, the motor then gets extremely hot, it burns the brushes and sends the comm instantly out of round.

but if I use the brushless motor, would it be ok?

I am pretty sure that Schumacher are producing an 1/8th scale replacment for the old Big6 that they have and that has a three speed transmission, in fact I am almost positive, there is a video of it running, I think that it can be found somewhere on the Schumacher forum!!

Electric motors are by nature far more flexible than Ic (they produce maximum torque at zero revs ) therefore the benifits of a gearbox are much less pronounced. With the reletively short tracks we tend to run on, the benifits would be lost by the extra weight / driveline drag / inefficency of the box itself.
On a very large track where having a very high top speed whilst keeping the same punch out of corners there might be a slight advantage.

I agree that for the RC 1/10 application, using a shifting gearbox is probably not going to be any benefit to the overall performace of the car.
If one could be produced, that was extremely effecient and lightweight, I would suggest a constantly variable transmission.
All electric motors have a power curve similar to I.C. The transmissions could be tuned to stay within the motors power curve for increased acceleration and run time. Mainly, you would want to stay within the most effecient part of the motors curve.
But we just race toy cars...
