Default Controlled or Open Practice at On Road National Events?

ROAR Nationals have wide open practice on the day before qualifying.

Races like the Novak Race, Reedy Race and IIC have nothing but Contolled Practice in Heat order.

The Snowbirds has semi controlled practice with time blocks for different classes.

What do you guys think is the best option for ROAR On Road National Events?

I was thinking open practice in the morning with time reserved at the end of the day to run one round of controlled practice in heat order with run through tech to sort out tech, frequency, and transponder issues.

If we get a reasonable consensus here I will bring your suggestions to the ROAR ExCom..

I definitely prefer controlled practice from the beginning for national onroad events.

realistically, almost everyone is showing up right at the beginning of practice.

Otherwise, it is a mess

Controlled practice only....look at the Reedy Race format. I think that's perfect...practice heats set up like Q's. And LIMITED controlled practice, ie, Wednesday and Thursday only. Reduce the time needed to attend a national event and I think entries will increase a little.

Controlled Practice ONLY! Totally due away with Open Practice and shorten the entire race program.

Either fully controlled practice in your actual heat race or timed (5 and 8 minute) runs by class.

CONTROLLED. SAVES FROM HAVING TO WAIT FOREVER IN LINE AND THEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE A SPEKTRUM YOU MAY HAVE TO LET PEOPLE BEHIND YOU GO AHEAD WHILE YOU WAIT FOR YOUR FREQ.

At the carpet and paved electric nationals this year we ran 2 rounds of controlled (by qualifying heats ...before the resort) practice on Wednesday and Thursday

...at the paved nationals we had a 3 hour "open practice" in the morning that was limited to 10 people at a time - 3 minute runs as well. ...if I recall correctly at the carpet nationals on Thursday morning they did the same thing for about an hour.

i like the idea of going by class for the early half or so, and running a round of heats at the end of each day of practice. for tuners, going by heats doesn't offer the option to run 5 laps, change it, and run 5 more, etc.

scotty's novak race has not been controlled, as was previously stated. and that is why it's so much fun. then again, it's all touring car so their aren't so many separations.

I guess I didn't anwer your questoin ;-) ...I say controlled practice by heats ...if people "insist" on open practice (as was the case with our paved nationals), then a small amount of time 10 people at a time - 3 minute intervals.

Controlled practice only. Same reason STLNTFST listed.

With the number of people that are attending the Nationals these days, I prefer to see Controlled Practice with the guys in your heat. This gives a very level playing ground to all racers. It also allows racers to know the ability level of the racers in their heat before competition begins. The only way to get more track time is to run more classes. Just my $.02

Reedy Race controlled practice format.
You know when your up, batts peaked, tires sauced and warmed up, ready to go. Speeds are the same, stock's not getting run over by mods, mods get clean runs. And by the time quals and mains come around, everyone is already in a rythom to go.
