Default Interpreting peak voltage during charging

I'm charging IB3800's and I'm wondering what to make of the peak voltage during a charge. What does it mean to the performance or state of condition of the batteries?

Higher peak voltage is a reflection of higher internal resistance, lower IR is generally proferable as there is more punch.

Don't get hung up about whether your pack that peaks at 9.15 is better than the one that peaks at 9.17, but if you notice that all your packs are peaking a lot higher than they did when they were new, it is a sign that they are getting tired.

Send a message via ICQ to Jan Larsen

Not to hijack the thread, but some time ago I charged a few packs (peaked at 9.23v), let them rest for 12 hours and repeaked them again. This time they peaked at 9.51v. Why is it cells peak at a higher voltage after a prolonged rest period?

I believe this to be because of a stale charge. I have found the best performance from a battery that was charged from a very low charge, rather than a battery that still had half charge fromt the last run. I think of it like a glass of soda. If you only refill a glass that still had some in it, it still tastes flat. If you empty the glass (battery) before refiling (charging) it, it's not flat!
