Wink The Cure for Scurvy....LiPo!!!

Seems like it's a rite of passage on RCTech these days for one to start his/her own thread regarding LiPo and its benefits/drawbacks.

Here's another one for the 'pile'.

Lithium is going in too many directions......first we have Lithium Polymer.....and now we have two other types being pushed and sold in Lithium Ion (a newer more RC type version) and Lithium Magnase.....kinda hard for the RC Industry to adopt a new technology when you have 3 brothers fighting over the spot as big brother.....

I like to roast marshmallows over my LiPo packs when they blow up. Or use them as Sterno to heat covered dishes. If you put one in your fireplace and overcharge it, there is no better way to start a roaring fire. I hear the military is equipping troops with a mandatory pack. For their flashlights? No...to start fires for survival training.

Chestnuts roasting on a LiPo pack....lawyers nipping at your heels.

Oh, what the hell. We will probably have them soon too.

Maybe if we ignore the new technology it will go away.

Ignoring it won't solve anything.....I just worry if we jump too soon on one type and the other type ends up being better (or possibly already is).....which makes it hard for the organizations to pick one and make the majority happy....

I say we all talk about it alot and don't buy anything. Then ignore it. Seriously though I am going to try one of these packs with a brushless in something, just look at the results Nick Case had.....160 mph with a dirt oval car OMG!!

Ignore - is a good word...

If R/C would have been forward thinking about 2 years ago, we would not have these discussions today. Yes it would be something else…

Hey I have idea, let's ignore that oil (which will run out some day (not in my life time)) and then we would not have spend money developing new technology and testing theories, everyone could just sit at home watching the rest of the world pass by, from our couch..... oh sorry, that is what is happening now……take a look around the world. The US has some the best minds teaching, teaching who… people from other countries that do not currently have internet, electric, running water, food… you get the idea…. Advancements are achieved by one step at a time. If 2 years from now, a better technology is available, we should explore it, after that is what R/C racing is all about, exploring the limits….

Sorry I just do not get this “Let’s wait, until something better comes along”.

EddieO – you made a very big investment (your life) into motors and speed (working with Big Jim), this I get, and you are maximize your return on your investment, this is good business, but you also will need to re-invest to stay current. IBM – tried to setting on the sidelines, in the early 90s, it did not work out so well for them, and they had to sell off a number of divisions to raise capital to get back on track. Today they doing well, but in business, big or small, you can not survive by setting on the sidelines, someone will eat you alive.

EddieO – I hope you do not take this posting as a flame, you are a motor god, and this is a fact. I see how you post to others, and felt this posting was in line. If not, I’m very sorry, as it was not my wish to “piss” on anyone, just to share the other view, as you have shared one side. I do agree, other technologies are coming, and fast, and the drive are the automotive companies with the billions they have to spend, then the government with more billions, to build motors that do not need oil, one option is batteries as a source of power, therefore you will see massive development in the next 10 to 20 years in this area, which will give our little R/C world will have many choices, that is very clear for me. But we are talking about now, and what is in front of us, and we are talking about the decline of racers, not R/C as a whole, but the racing end.

Some times we need to take the little steps when they are available because waiting for the big step my kill the sport….

old schoolers would like to take on this new technology slowly and and make educated decisions for the future that r/c is headed.

The people who have already embraced lipo's want them mainstream and legal now.
