Default 48 versus 64 pitch

I know this may seems like and old question. I know that 48 pitch uses to last a little better and they are a little noisier too. The 64's are known for more efficiency.

But how much more effective are they? Can it actually be felt while driving or can it be measured?

If you measure effectiveness by gear ratio selection, then 64 pitch offers more options. The car will sound quieter and some folks think they are more efficient at laying down power.

I use 48 pitch outdoors because the spurs don't strip as easily. I use 64p on carpet.

I always recommend that newcomers to racing start with 48p because they are easier to mesh and are more durable.

Well, I've been driving for 2-3 years and got a good selection of 48 pitch. If I choose to go to 64, it will be indoor only.

By effecience, I was thinking about less powerloss in the drivetrain. Will I gain an advantage, if I spend the money and go to 64 pitch?

The actual difference in efficiency is very slight if any. THe real advantage to 64 pitch lies in the finer gear ratio selections available.

Exactly, while there may be a very slight advantage in efficiency for 64 pitch, it's so small I doubt many people could ever notice. The best reason by far to go with them(if you can mesh them properly, it is more difficult than for 48 pitch) is the extra gearing flexibility, going up one tooth in the pinion makes a smaller difference than in 48 pitch, so you can make finer gearing adjustments. And of course the downside is if you're more prone to hitting stuff, you run a higher risk of stripping spurs with 64 pitch, so your driving also needs to be up to par....

Thanks. I'll stay with my 48's and spend the money somewhere else.
