I have so many questions regarding motors, esp Modified motors.


1.) Proper way to break-in new motors, how may volts? Which is best Dc or cells?
2.) After the brushes are seated, should i lathe the comm?
3.) Is it ok to use a new armature to a seated brush which was broken in from another armature? or do i have to still break it in again with the new armature?
4.) In modified motors, are hard spring on positive and soft spring on negative method applicable? What does it do?
5.) Where does the current run, from positive to negative or the opposite?


Here are some of my partial questions, hope you guys can help me, Is Troy Schroeder of Fantom in this Forum? or Mr Reedy perhaps? Or Any of you motor Gurus out there can share some infos. Tnx in advance.

Want to know what Comm size is the most efficient? and at what comm size should i throw my armature away? Anybody? please....

There is no particular comm size that's most efficient. It is generally accepted that once the comm reches .270" diameter it its useful life is over.

Is it true that the smaller the comm becomes the faster it goes? or maybe its just beacause it becomes fast bcoz you cut it after every run??

it may seem faster due to themotor spooling up quicker and in most cases after a comm is cut you get faster on the track but if you cut too much your motor will tend to drag abit and really drain your batteries,(bat's get hot). be sure to change your brushes after you cut the com, I cut my motors after 6 runs stock, and 4 runs mod ....hope this help's.....LATE!!!!nod:

After evry run my comm gets black, am using an 11tx2 motor and with a 7.6 gear ratio. I cut my comm after 3 runs, i clean my comm after evry run, is it maybe b'coz I use braking sometimes? I didnt put comm drops on it.

Sounds more like you're overgearing it to me. Overgearing will cause the brushes to discolor & the comm to turn black or red(red means you're likely just a little off, black is bad)...Now about comms getting smaller, you can pick up some extra top end(rpms come up), but you do tend to lose torque in the process, so you have to make some adjustments to keep it running the same in your car....

A black comm may indicate too much arcing at the brush/comm interface.

If it's due to arcing, you can try retarding timing or running a little bit stiffer brush springs.

What kind of timing are you running?
