The car that won the RCCA contest supposedly went 160. However it's not an "official" world record unless the Guinness team is there to make it official. Also, RCCA used a radar gun rather than a speed trap, which is pretty much a standard for measuring speed runs.

Electric is faster because when the throttle is mashed, power is instantly fed and electric motors spool up to their RPM levels faster than nitro engines. Nitro would need a very well tuned engine, a centax clutch and one hell of a set up to hang with a properly geared, modded out electric vehicle. 2006 going into 2007 is really gonna show and prove who the big dogs are in this nitro and electric thing. With innovations in electric coming out every week, I dont see how nitro is going to be able to compete in the future.

nitro cars out of the box are usually faster,
for on road nitro touring cars have a higher center of gravity, everythings equal the electric car should be able to hustle thru the infield faster.

for nitro cars as well as full time cars. the equalizer would be more cubic inches. for example a nova rossi .21 in a 1/8th Serpant. it would probably still take a lot of modding (money) to surpass the 160 mph mark.

I believe the official record is 111 mph by Cliff Lett set a number of years ago at Irwindale Speedway on the front straight. It was a purpose built pan car running 24 cells and a 2 turn brushless.

Yup, it's in the 2003 Guinness Book of World Records, in case anyone is interested.

Nic ( some chubby guy with skills) converted a nitro tc3, ran brushless and Li-Po and smashed that record by laying it down with a 160 mph pass. He than ran a 2wd buggy and smashed it with a 138mph pass.

There is an article/thread over at RCCA but I don't think it's official (outside of RCCA) and from what I've heard there are no videos or "proof." Guinness wasn't present for Cliff's run, but ABC taped and aired it, which was enough to be official.

I was there, I saw it. The video tape doesn't capture the speed that you see in person. The posted speeds are easily believable. He probably had to get up to 80-90 mph just to get enough downforce to get into the throttle without overpowering the tires. It was very impressive. I don't think we have seen the most out of that car yet!!

From what I gather in order for Guiness to be there one of our sanctioning bodies had to host it, ie; ROAR, IFMAR, etc....

I was following the whole thing from the start of it 2 years ago, it was origionally supposed to be run on an Oval track which may or may not have helped the nitro cars, but I bet it would have helped the guy with the gasoline powered car.

There is just no off the shelf gearbox that will help a Nitro can beat out an Electric car. You'd need a multiple speed gearbox since the Nitro's have no low end torque and definitely can't match the RPM of a brushless aircraft motor running 30 volts! Many of those motors can run 50 volts and more than 100,000 RPM!

My design was basically a pan car running aircraft electronics and over 30 GP1100's. Basically is all I'll say.... Mathematically what a car can do and what it can do in the real world are very different.
