Has anyone had a go at making some sort of dyno?

I have had a go of sorts... but i'm not sure if the results I am getting are right.

basically I hooked up the motor being tested to 1v and a slave motor, and then measure the amps that the slave motor is producing.

Based on Ohms law... Power = volts x amps

if I input 1 volt to the motor being tested and the slave motor that is being turned by the test motor is producing 4 amps, does that mean that (less any losses) that the motor being tested is producing 4 watts??

Pete

I have made both Power Supply Distribution Boxes and Motor Coolers.

Hey there, I was thinkin about makin a motor cooler but the peltier device is just hard to find here in Malaysia.

So I was thinkin about makin motor cooler by using copper tube wrap around the motor and having icy cool water flowing inside the copper tube.

I know that this is not very high tech and wouldn't bring the motor down to a chilly tempereature but I think it would work.

combine 1 pair of old jean with a pair of scissiors, trim
toss in 4m of cuprothol, 4m of audio speaker wire, solder in parallel
combine with a sewing machine, and apply power
draws 10amps and gets to 70deg c in about 3 min.

Yeehaa!

sorry, just my humourous side...

I take absolutly no responsibiliy if you stuff this up. burn yourself etc. I burnt myself several times, and have burn lines on my hands to proove it.

NOT recommended for kids!! You have been warned!!

ok... ready? cut 4 denim rectangles out of old jeans, about 10cm wide, and 15 cm long

next thing is to find out how much resistance wire to use, i used about 75cm of cuprothol per warmer, apply 12v to the 75cm length and it should get hot to touch, but not hot enough to burn the denim.

sew about 75cm of cuprolthol wire into 4 lenthwise 'sleeves' up and down the denim so that it cannot touch itself, twist and solder on about 40cm of speaker wire

do this 4 times

then solder all the positive ends of the speaker wires together and insulate well, do the same for the negatives then apply a small amount of power, see how hot it gets, increase power as you see fit.

it is a bit tricky, and you must use a sewing machine, otherwise it will take FOREVER.

I'll be making another, better set soon... will post any improvements

cut up the jeans ONLY IF THE'RE NOT LEVIS as you should get a couple of decades more wear from them!!!
seriously peter, nice work to come up with a cheap alternative

Like the boxes, but Love the cooler even more. I have tried the same but cannot get the device lower than 16 degrees C let alone form ice. Can you post details of have you built it??

And love the tyre warmers Pete.

Yeah man, stuff paying $200 for a set of warmers that tells you how hot the tyres are...

this costs about $10, not including the digital thermometer, which was $30

mind you, it might be cool having "Red Tab" or "501" warmers...

The reason you can't just pick some up off the shelf is because nitrogen is a gas at room temperature. A good thermos flask can be used to store liquid nitrogen for one to two days, as it will keep it cold and won't get destroyed as the nitrogen is poured in (-196C). You'd have to ask somewhere that stores a large quantity of liquid nitrogen if they have any to spare. Hospitals/mortuaries, physics labs, cyronics labs, or fruit freezing facilities.

heres a pic of my attempt at a basic slave motor dyno, not a great pic, but I had some space in my powerbox, so i put an old stock motor in it, using a universal joint to connect the motor being tested and then putting in 1v via my charger, and then reading the results on a voltmeter.

Have you measured the voltage output?
