buboy28: yokomo YZ-110 pro. its exactly the same as the ice but with blue backlight and included temp probe

checkpoint also has their new ice version - max 10amp charge, 20amp discharge, 20amp motor run

btw, you have PM re. the lipo chargers.

btw, anyone here using the TME Xtrema Lipo Charger/Wattmeter?

TME Xtrema

a bit off topic, but what's a wattmeter?

The TME Etrema charger is one of the chargers I have.

The good:
The charge voltage is adjustable, so it's a great tool to use for a partial storage charge (ie charge to 3.80V CC/CV for an approx 50% charge level).
It's also compatible with the A123 batteries which are charged to a lower voltage than lipo.
The wattmeter goes in line with your motor. It will measure amps, watts, power, peak current etc. That tool is mostly used for airplane guys where they need to measure the current a motor pulls to make help them pick a compatible battery.

The bad:
It's big and bulky compared to almost all the lipo chargers out there.

I picked up some of the Platinum packs, and I noticed this week that when I race with them, I use 500-700 less mAh than I do from my Carbon packs. Is there some reason for that based on the batteries, or should be looking elsewhere for the answer?

just in case you guys don't know:The avionics charger is nothing more than a re -labelled charger, i bought this one :

http://www.ripmax.com/item.asp?itemi...Category=O0100

(hope the link works)

exactly the same features, 60 euros (at my lhs...in Geneva, Switzerland, the Hometown of Orion ! ) and i bought it before the avionics was released.
Awesome charger, you can't beat the price. 5amp lipo charge, now that's not useless !

however i was told that maybe the software could be a little different from brand to brand( i swear i have seen this charger under at least 5 brands just the case and the price varies)

What can I do about this if thats the case?

Thanks.
tt - yes this is normal. Lipo batteries are very efficient when you compare the input to the output capacity. If you put in 3000mAh, you will most likely get around 2900mAh in output. Compare that to NIMH, when a new IB3800 will take in 4200-4400mAh, but puts out a measly 3300mAh under discharge.

Since you are putting in 3000-3100, your batteries are mostly discharged. It's not exactly a good thing to "dump" all the capacity of your lipo. It's always a good idea to check to see if you cells are still balanced if you run your lipo that low. Kokam claims that their cell will "never" need balancing if you don't discharge below 80%. Your cells are beyond 80% dischaged if you are putting 3000 back into a 3200 cell.

The Ripmax charger is made by Bantam - which is an exception charger manufacturer. Personally, I hate the yellow color and backlight.

I don't know who makes the Orion Version. If someone can open theirs up, and check. If it's made by Bantan, then there is usually a Bantam label on the board.

I was thinking of buying a TA05 again. Does anyone know if the Carbon 3200's work without modification? I was concerned about the battery strap covering the + or - inputs as the strap has that weirdo shape to it.

thanks,
eric

Yes they fit fine, a local guy tested mine in his car.

linger I got a chance to open mine. Don't see a label that says Bantm but I can't easily get to the back of the board. Front has this info: P136-32 / Swallow 2 / 2005. 09. 09

Too much effort to unglue the out jacks from the case to pull the board to look at the back. Just finished 12 hours of sucking water out of the carpet in the basement. Woke up to 5" of water this morning and a dead sump pump.

Thanks for that, because I run a novak 5800 with a GTB and 2cell smart stop, I just stop running once the blue LED goes on, is there anything else I can do to stop it from going below 80% as the smart stop cuts off at 6.??V

Also if I dont ever charge it to its full capacity (3200) how would I check that it has been fully charged if I say start charging them at 30% capacity, 40% capacity etc? by reading the voltage?

Oh and I was also considering getting the Avionics charger, but instead got the ICE, the avionics would of costed me roughly 125, and for $25 extra I got the ICE instead, you guys reckon that was a better move?

Thanks.

I'll show you mine if you show me yours

Your Hyperion looks IDENTICAL to the RIPMAX.
The board ID on my Ripmax is P136-32 / Swallow 2 / 2005.09.09

Should we add the Multiplex to that list?

The charger stops when the battery is full. You can start charging at 30% 50%, etc; it doesn't matter. The ICE has a feature to keep a limit on how much leaves the charger. It's for putting "some" charge into a nimh after equalizing and as a safety so if peak dont' kick in, it will stop after X mah(based on % of full capacity). Voltage doesn't really tell you how "charged" a battery is.

After racing for a while and paying attention to what goes on, you can develop a habit of knowing how much you use or left behind in your batteries. You should NEVER run any car till it's slow. With high capacity cells; running till slow means beating the crap out of the motor and tires, which is unecessary.
