I'm getting them to basically forge the way through my local track. I can't wait for someone else to do it. I'm ready now, and I'm the one that has to get the ball rolling. With all the "urban legends", seeing them is going to be the only way these people get over it. Narrow minds are hard to crack.

It's basically my Li-Po test lab and it fits in the same case I used to use just to hold my 12 Ni-MH batteries.
what sucks for me is.... TCS season is starting up. that means i need to spend to get some Nimhs again.

My batteries should be coming on Mon or Tues. Temps around here have been upper 20s to low 40s. If these batteries have to sit outside for several hours, will the temps affect them in anyway? I was going to let them warm up to room temperature naturally before I did anything to them. Any thoughts??

Default Anyone damage one yet?

Has anyone crashed heavy enough to damage a LiPo pack?

Last week at the WRAM show I went to a seminar about LiPo batteries. The person hosting has been flying RC planes for 27 years, and electric for 10. He gave a list of do's and don'ts about LiPo. Bottom line was as long as you're careful the packs are safe.

But one thing that had red flags waving was what can happen if LiPo packs are damaged. Now he was talking about an airplane crash, but on occasion a damaged LiPo pack will ignite, sometimes hours after the damage takes place. He gave horror stories about fliers driving home only to pull over and watch their cars burn. Or even get all the way home and start a fire in the garage.

Now an airplane hitting the ground is pretty hard, but I've seen some hard car crashes, and the occasional smoking NiMh pack. Now for outdoors I think we face the same danger as the airplanes, but what about indoors? A carpet soaked in paragon, wood for borders, and the fact that you're inside. This is a very volitale situation.

So I'm curious if this has happened to anyone in the car world.

The new LiPo cells for car racing that I have seen are all cased in hard plastic that seems to give the cells more protection. If you crash hard enough to break the case then you definatley want to check to make sure the cells were not damaged. I have not seen any damaged cells at any of our local tracks and I have seem some pretty big crashes.

I watched one car with a LiPo pack get airborne off a corner dot and fly into a concrete wall. He damaged the car pretty well but the pack was in perfect shape.

There have been plenty of stories of LiPo packs being damaged in crashes (or other means) in cars and having them ignite as a result, even well after the fact. Needless to say, DO NOT underestimate a damaged LiPo.

With that said, as it's been said 100 times in this thread alone, the Kokam cells that Orion uses don't suffer from the same problems as other LiPo. They seem to have been designed in such a way that ignition is highly unlikely. I haven't heard of it ever happening with these cells, though I suppose anything is possible.

The problem seems to be more prominent with cheap LiPo cells. I guess the moral of the story is do your research, be safe, and don't be cheap.

been looking into switching to lipo for a while.........
orion 4800...3200.... and many companies, could some one tell me a st8 answer.. what is the diff between orion 3200 vs other company like maxamp?
just saw on other tread that hard case is "waste" and price diff is very min, but yet capacity is greater...
