That looks a whole lot like the Orion charger, features and everything. Maybe the Orion charger is OEM? That seems to be kind of common with chargers these days. Orion has done a nice job of keeping theirs inexpensive, and made it pretty, so that's cool.

That is one of the many great things about LiPo’s. An inexpensive charger works just as good as the expensive ones. The result is that using LiPo’s is not only less maintenance, thus easier to use than NiMh, but are also cheaper when you consider the price of a charger and the number of packs you need to buy.

And going by that other thread with the exploding NImH , Li-Po is safer aswell (well a little bonfire as opposed as a shotgun )

The fact that this will fit without mods in my T2 definatly earns it some points with me.

P.S. About that exploding shotgun Nimh. It was charged at 12amps! If thats not asking for trouble I dont know what is.

Wow, I didn't even realise that there was a seperate thread for the new pack.

Theres some good info here, and the new pack is definitely looking good. May be able to sell my old Platinum and get one of these. But since I've already modded my TA05 to fit the Platinum, would it really be worth it to get the new pack?

I imagine it is because the 4800 has 4 cells; two in parallel and two in series so it really acts like two cells. This is also why we are able to balance the cells using just the one port on the bottom. I may have gotten my terminology mixed up there so please someone correct me if I said that wrong.

i really like the idea of lipos since it sounds like it not only saves time, but saves money pretty quickly too. I'm completely new to the idea of lipo though. what are the basics that i shoudl know about them? Do i need to discharge packs after a day or racing/bashing? do they need to be balanced? if i charge them thinking ill race the next day, but find out the event is cancelled, should i discharge it to a certain point, or is it ok to leave the pack with a full charge? i have the general idea of them, except about the questions i stated.

1. No need to discharge the packs after a race.
2. Packs do need to be balanced but not often. Some charges do this automatically or you can buy a simple balancer that plugs into the battery.
3. If you charge for a race and then don't run them it's fine to leave them charged.

LiPos operate more efficiently than NiMH, so you will get more power and more duration for a given capacity. They require less maintenance, can be used time after time with no loss in performance, and can be stored completely charged (or charged well in advance) and not experience any loss in performance.

You must use a LiPo specific charger. Or one that includes a LiPo charge profile. They will be damaged permanently if you overharge or over-dishcarge them. And they can be more dangerous if treated improperly.

As with NiMh, there are many different brands and levels of quality. Performance, lifespan, and safety can vary tremendously from brand to brand.

To your specific questions...

You do not want to discharge after use or after a day of racing. In fact, you will need to store them with around 50% capacity.

The battery may need to be balanced in time. You can use a LiPo balancer, or with the Platinum or Carbon packs, you can charge each cell individually to full capacity to balance them.

You can store your unused pack in its fully charged state until you need to use it. You just need to be sure it is not plugged in.

Does the Orion packs need "break in" cycles before use?

I can't find the orion lipo faq, could you please post a link to it.

What amp should they be charged at? I have 2, 2 cell 1650 7.4v lipo's wired in parallel and charging at 2 amps right now. Is that ok?
