Default What do you think of more than 10 cars per race?

Just curious if anyone else shares my view that races at big venues/track could and should be increased to 12 or 15 (or more) cars per heat/race.

I know this wouldn't be feasible at small tracks but considering we've got AMBrc transponders now and DSM radios increasing their market share, it's now technically possible to have well over 10 cars per run. I understand at the TC Worlds the organizers ran 15 cars per practice heat. It was tight but it was done!

Anyway, what do you all think?

I would say that if the track is big enough, then go for it. We already run 12 cars at most of the larger ROAR events in 1/8th On-Road and 1/10th Nitro Touring.

Probably not a problem if you have most of them on the same lap or close to the same lap. If there is a big difference then it yields to the more experienced drivers getting around traffic.

I think it would be cool to to it Le mans style... 3 classes on the track all at the same time....

Having a rule-of-thumb in place would be a way to do this.

For example, the track must have a minimum of XXX foot run line for 12 cars and a XXX foot run line for 15.

Did you know.....

This is how the Indianapolis Motor Speedway came up with 33 cars all those years ago? They figured each car needed 400 feet to run safely, if they're all spaced evenly around the track.

2.5 * 5280 = 13,200 ft.

13,200 / 400 = 33 cars

Same sort of thing can be done with R/Cs.

I'm all for it if the track is big enough.

I would say you need to give each car 2 seconds of track space for it to be comfortable.

Nitro buggies have been running 12 or more people per heat for some time.

not reasonable to run more than ten cars no matter how big the track is

hpipro321: any reason why not?

if you look at the driver stand at open practice section. sometimes you see more then 10 people running their car with different motors and such.

I would personally perfer running more then 10 cars... as it seems more enjoyable.

here's an idea....

Would have to be all brushless and lipo....

Modified (any motor) gets 8000mah packs
19 turn (SS4800) gets 6000mah packs
stock (13.5) gets 4000mah packs

They qualify seperately

5 cars per class, 15 on the track at the same time and 20 minute mains!!! Have class winners and overall winners. Seperate each by what main they meake, all A's together, B's and so on....

Would be even better to have different bodies for each class, but it's just a dream anyway....

At our medium sized track, we do staggered starts. I have seen #1 run the whole track and almost rear-end #10 before he even got the go ahead to start. I have to say that it is more fun with more cars on the track. Makes you earn your spot.

The drivers stand would start to get pretty crowded....and pit lane too.

it should work at the larger tracks and events where they can resort drivers based on timed practice.

Track size doesn't matter as much as driver/car ability. You would think that an oval track with over 1000 foot run line would be enough for 15 cars, right? Well not if the back markers are spinning out creating an obstacle course for the rest of the field.

At a big onroad track you might be able to get away with it if you had a quick IFMAR starter so that the leader isn't passing the 12 or 15th place car before they have chance to start. Maybe do a group IFMAR start. In a 12 car field do starts of 3 cars at a time. They key to making this successful is no matter how you did it is to drill driver courtesy into everyone's head during qualifiers....because otherwise I'm going to crash the guy on the stand yelling "LEADER LEADER" or "IM ON A TQ RUN". Leave that to the race director/announcer.

At Socal raceway the mod lap times average around 8 or 9 seconds, with 10 cars on the track thats less than 1 second per car. It's crowded, but it can be done. At large races where the entries fill up like the RROC, this would allow another 50+ racers to enter. As long as the driver stand and pit areas are large enough, I'm all for it. Other bennifits could include; lowering the entry cost per person, having the race day a little shorter, or adding an extra qualifier.

I think a good racer can drive around traffic. With IFMAR starts to many drivers can drive a track but have no idea how to drive around back markers. So they punt the guy out of the way. I have scene this with some well know racers out there.

Run as many as the track can handle.
