Monster horsepower stock pro (gearing)
Hello there,
I running a TC-3 in stock how should I gear it? The track I'm running on is a med/big sized track any help would greatly be apreciated .

From my experience with the MS, I would gear with a FINAL drive ratio of around 7.40 to start.
That is Spur~Pinion x Trans Ratio=Final Drive Ratio. Then go up or down depending on how the Car/Motor feel on the track.

I've ran my TC3 at 6.25 ratio with great results. I usually end up a lap ahead of everyone. But this is also with foam tires which wear down. And the cold/cool weather helps too. Some people are geared around 6.90 at our tracks. One of our tracks (Durham) has a straight that is 213' long. (They will be hosting the 2003 Roar Electric Onroad Nationals 
). The other track we run has a straight around 145' long. But it's deeper than the Durham track. So laps times are about the same at both tracks. Anyhow, best start out with around 7.0 gearing and go from there. Add a tooth to the pinion every time til your lap times start slowing down.

What about tire size? When your talking about ratios, what tire size are you using?
7.40=? tire size
6.25=? tire size
I run 6.9 starting out with a 60mm tire, and have tried going to a smaller tire to see if speed increases. I tried 7.5 or 7.2 last weekend and the car topped out before the end of our 80' back straight. I would say 3/4 of the way down it was out of gas, that was with 60mm tires. I didn't try that ratio with smaller tires, I was too disappointed by the initial speed to try any other combos with that gearing.

You ARE talking about a Monster Stock Motor right? Sounds more like gearing for a P2K. The Monster has the power and torque to pull the higher ratio, but it is really a high rpm Motor and will benefit from the lower gearing. (7.40 vs 6.90)

8.4????? you are killing all the speed... anything higher than 7.2 on a stock motor is killing top end. That goes for a track the size of a shoe box.
Stock motors by nature have a ton of torque. Gearing final drive past 7 only takes away from the RPM it doesn't have.
With a Monster stock you can drive 99% of the tracks right at 7.0 without burning up the motor and still have tons of pull.
For a medium to open track I would run 7.0 (98/35) with 57mm tires. 7.4 (98/33) with 60mm tires.
If it seems to be running cool, you can try 98/36 or 98/34... All depends on if you cary speed well through the turns.

8.4?!?! Wow!! I run my Ti 12x2 at 8.5-9.0 at SoCal and always have a nice cool motor. That Monster Stock is a strange animal.

8.4 does seem a bit high for a stock motor. I run on a fairly small track and I still gear around 7.0 - 7.5 fdr for any stock motor. 8.4 is pretty extreme, it's close to what I might run a 13 turn at when you get that high, there is no way a stock motor is gonna make enough rpm to run that ratio.

I believe my tires were right at 60mm when I geared it at 6.25 ratio. Like I said before, nobody could touch me and many thought I was cheating. I'll have to try goin the other way in gearing to see. One thing though at this track, if you can't drive it a higher ratio (7 and up) might help ya out with the stop and go. I'm more smooth and carry more speed thru the turns than most. So I really don't slow down much. My fastest lap times are around 18.5 here, but normally 19.1ish. The other fast guys are generally 19.8. Everyone else is in the 20's per lap.
Now for a small track I can understand the gearing at 7up. hehe.. But not here.... Especially the track with the long 213' straight. I have yet to try a Monster Stock on carpet. But I will come Jan 4th. I'll have to find my sweet spot then. Perhaps I'll try starting my gearing at 98/35 with 60mm tires. Then go down from there.

I'm only talking carpet, approx. 80' x 40'. With a fresh cut on the com & new brushes, 60mm tires & a 6.9 ratio, it worked well enough to get me accused of cheating also.

If you are REALLY running a Monster Stock with that final gearing then that funny smell after your run, is the windings burning.
Trinity recommends 3 teeth smaller on the pinion than with a P2K, so figure the ratio. Seems about right at something close to 8.0
