Default Still trying to decide...

On the Novak site, I've read that it's necessary to use both a cap, and a diode. Is that the case if your racing stock???

Is a cap & diode required for the LRP Quantum Competition?

I've found the Keyence locally for $199.99. I can spend the cash, but I don't feel completely at ease.

If top notch ESC's went for less than $100, this wouldn't be so hard for me.

Geppetto,

I have never found it necessary to use a diode in stock or mod, with any make of speedo I have used. I certainly don't use them on our GT7s.

Regards

Joe from sunny Malta.

johnbull: Greetings to you, in Malta. Thanks for your input. Another issue for me has been the fact that if I spend less ($128.99 USD for the Novak, opposed to $199.99 USD for the Keyence), I have $70.00 to apply towards a "high end" servo. In the past I've always used the standard servo, this time I want to do better.

Hi guys. Greetings from Malta.

GEPPETTO. I agree with your line of thought completely.

A good fast and strong servo is money very well spent.

We use KO Propo 2143 Digital servos on our cars these days. They are fast, strong in terms of the load they can turn, and strong in the fact that they have metal gears. Also we have never experienced any trouble with them so far, so I cannot but recommend them. Another advantage of the 2143 is the fact that it is a 3 wire servo, as opposed to some other digital servos that are 4 wire.

Actually RC Zone is presently featuring an article about digital servos and their pros and cons. I'm sure you will find it interesting.

As an aside, I received a copy of Martin Crisp's book on chassis set up, yesterday. I have already read it - only 66 pages. Believe me it is brilliant. I have been in the real racing car business for over 30 years, and have designed and built my own full size racing car, which won the National Hill Climb championship on two successive years, so I know a bit about suspension tuning, yet this book taught me more.

I definately recommend it to anyone in RC.

Regards

Joe from sunny Malta.

Default Finally decided!!!

Well after so much indecision, I made a trip to the hobby shop and picked up my ESC.

I went with the Keyence Zero V Extreme.

I searched and searched but was unable to find anything negative concerning this ESC. The comments from the local factory drivers (not Keyence sponsored), and other information I could find in posts and threads all seemed to be very positive.

I decided against the Novak and Quantum Comp. for various reasons that include the fact that they both require (according to the manuf.) capicators and diodes. I'll admit that a lot of the negative comments about the GT7 influenced my decision. While the Quantum is super small, the large cap sort of defeated the small size. Also, I've heard more racers complain about the case coming apart.

I'll post some my impressions of the instructions, setup and over all feeling of quality as I become familiar with the ESC over the weekend. I really won't be able to speak to its performance since we still have a couple of months before spring arives.

I was talking to an excellent racer (Cleveland 1/12 Stock champion last year) about the reliability of the GT7. He told me that to stop them from blowing up, factory drivers were using up to 5 diodes on their motors . This was in 1/12 and TC mod. I suspect that if you install some diodes it should solve your problems

To put an end to this discussion, just take a look at Kinwalds car.

If you have to do this to an esc, than I don't want it, period!!!
