Hmm... I've been considering the same. The price is right (about $80), however, I recently learned that Integy has or is about to release a motor dyno. The price on the Integy is about $130, but I haven't seen any details on this unit.

The Integy motor dyno and Orion motor checker are pretty similar. Both allow you to adjust the voltage to the motor, making them useful for break in and driving a lathe as well as their motor checking functions. Both measure current draw and commutation ripple. The Integy also measures no-load RPM, the Orion does not.

Neither is an actual dyno in the true sense of the word, they don't apply any load to the motor and can't determine power output.

The only local shop around here that sells the Orion unit is asking $139... I'd be interested in hearing where it's available for $80. I could do without the Integy's no-load RPM readings for $50 less.

$89 is still significantly better than the local hobby shop's price of $139 for the Orion.

I might have to give Sheldon's a call...

Thanks,

Trips

What I know is that you can easily find the zero timing point which can vary significantly from can to can. I spook once to someone that uses it. He told me that he once checked the point of max power told by the checker with a dyno. He said it was right on the spot. I ordered one but I'm waiting for 8 weeks now
