id probably wait a little bit and keep your eyes on the classifieds. seen a few tc6 rollers pop up for around $250. that's a much better value. just change out some bearings and your good to go.
i didn't do any of that when i got my tc5 though. just put my electronics in and went racing. car is tricky to balance properly with lipo without being heavy. mine was around 1550 grams race ready and left/right balanced.
that was fine until my battery poofed and i had to start all over again with the new lipos ha.
tc5 is a plenty fast car though. maybe i just love it because its my first car ha.

I purchased a TC5 last night, used, but in near mint condition for $175. It came with a gazzillion spare parts and was owned by one of the best driver's at our track. His work schedule is keeping him from running the days our track (www.rcarindy.com) does on-road.
It didn't include the servo/ESC/motor. Does have the diggity designs battery holder.
I'm happy with what I got. That $400 price tag just for a chassis for a TC6 was just too hard to justify in this economy. My wife says our kids have to eat and wear clothes. So, it was a prudent decision...

As I recall, 4.0 was the FDR that was recommended at the time that VTA was 21.5 brushless. Now that its 25.5 other racers at the track have told me that the 4.0 FDR is not aimed at so much. Dunno. You'll have to do some research on the VTA site to know for sure. I will too:

I bought my 21.5, ran it for about a month, and then they switched to 25.5 so I had to sell it and replace it with the new motor. Grrr!
Still, I love VTA. Nothing like it! For a guy that grew up in the 1970's, muscle cars were just as important as girls! I wish now I'd spend more of my money on muscle cars!

4.0 seems ideal for me personally. Keeping temps in check with a track temping at 160+ itself in the summer it was about the max I could do. I recently put a motor fan on it so might be able to swing a 3.9/3.8.
Im actually about to go the other way and try a 4.1/4.2 to try to get more infield speed versus straight away speed

Most of the guys are increasing their timing too on their 25.5. I haven't done that. I'll worry about going faster when I worry less about hitting the wall!

I bumped mine up 1 tick mark on the timing tab. Did make a difference but I think I still need to adjust gearing to help "match" the timing

so set the tc5r up carpet using rick hohwarts iic2008 setup. surprised at how well the car handles on ashphalt with that setup so might try it next year outdoors.
the question though, is should i be running the slipper spool up front or a ball dif? i built one of each i can try just curious which i should be expecting to run. our track is a pretty tight and technical 12th circuit. 3 rolls of carpet if that means anything. 6ft lanes.

ill give both a try but the spool is generally easier for me to drive no question. .
now all i have to figure out is how to prevent the chassis from flexing so much i murder spurs since my inline motor mount mod.
rebuilt shocks,difs,replaced steering post and some bearings. hope i can get another year out of the car before i get a new one.

Here's my new body I just airbrushed last night. Its an HPI Nissan 350Z. 190mm version. Turned out nice.
Faskolor metallic blue with a fake carbon fiber hood. Neon red perimeter stripe. Fits the TC5 chassis and front foam bumper really well. I will run it in USGT with a 21.5 at my local track R/CAR Association. www.RCARIndy.com
