Fat500,

leave the wires like normal. Flip the fan over.

Yeah they suck. We think this is so it doesn't blow dust and crap into the motor.

The only motors that I have seen that can have a fan mounted are the cobalt motors. There are two holes in the heatsink on the endbell that can have a fan attached to.

flipping the fan will do the trick but is their a advantage to the fan sucking the air through as opposed blowing in? why would they design it like this? Is their some air flow sceintific theory behind this? Thanks

This the best theory I can come up with (and bear with me it might get a bit confusing because I can't explain myself too well):

To get the best efficiency out of the fan, you want to have the air flow from the fan in the same direction as the surrounding air flow. Therefore the fan can use the surrounding air flow rather than have to work against it. When the car is going forward, which is usually is, the surrounding air flow goes from the front of the car to the back. Therefore you need to have the fan facing back towards the rear of the car to maximise the efficiency of the fan.

Now if you reverse the fan on the heatsink so it blows through the heatsink, to maximise the efficiency of the fan, you need to mount the fan horizontally on the front side of the motor. Likewise with the fan sucking through the heatsink, you need to mount the fan on the rear side of the motor.

However, if the fan is on the front side of the motor, it is very unprotected and a rock could easily go through the fan and break the blades off (I have seen this happen with a 3racing fan where the fan came back with only 2 blades left). But if you mount it facing the rear of the car (and hence sucking through the heatsink) the fan is relatively protected but the motor can itself from rocks and other debris.

This is why I mount my fan horizontally facing backwards. I don't know if this theory is right or completely wrong but after having my fan for 6 months, I haven't broken a blade and have seen some break after 2 races.

the 3racing heatsink fan is 6.00 us off ebay and 4.00 for shipping.
they have 2 different styles and 5 different colors. If you look, their is one seller in the usa selling them for the same price as the asian sellers and comes in like 3-4 days. that is who i got mine from. Do a search and type in 3racing fan and it will bring up a bunch of em.

I flipped the fan over and only used 2 screws to put it back on - now it hangs out over the endbell and blows towards the endbell. Soldered the female plug that it came with to the speed control and servo taped the plug to the side of the speedo. Now I can just unplug it and take it off if it's in the way.

I bought a heatsink from 3Racing with the fan mounted on top from Stella-Models. I received it within 10days from Hongkong to the Netherlands.
