Yah, I did, but didn't check my e-mail before my last post. Sure glad you posted an easy way to differentiate between the two types of brushes. I was peering in with a small flashlite to check the brushes. They are a slightly different color, I think. Much easier to look at the outside of the can.

My software for the Fantom dyno must be an old version cause some of the #s you get are not on mine. I'll have to get some updated software. By the way, I ran up against one of your newer Red Dots and can only say --------Brilliant, man, Brilliant. It keeps pulling 20-30 feet past when mine runs out of breath.

Will answer your e-mail as soon as I get back from the Tamiya track tomorrow. Also good to see some life in this thread again

Here another tip: if you absolutely MUST water dip your motor (and for the life I me I can't imagine why anyone would want to do such a thing), use distilled water. It's available from your local grocery and because it is unchlorinated and has fewer heavy metals in it, there will be less junk coating your comm after you finish.

Hey guys... cool to see your motors flying off the shelves Doc

I picked up a new Swift the other day & it came with a Johnson that I haven't seen before... it has a raw-finished can with a black stamp on the side similar to the newer Mabuchis, & the endbell looks exactly like a Mabuchi, but it has the Johnson logo & icon engraved on the opposite end. Weird. I haven't even plugged it up to anything yet, but I just wondered if it was anything out of the ordinary.... ??

Our outdoor mini series is starting and we chose to run the black cans.

Aha. You guys should shoot me an e-mail so we can discuss the black can stuff offline. They're a very different beast.

Mitch, that's the latest Johnson kit motor & they seem to be showing up randomly in Swifts and TBo2's and TT01's. I've worked on a half dozen of them and thrown five away. The sixth one was a screamer, but those odds don't sound good to me.

Hey rccardr,

I would like to know any tricks you have for the Black Can as we use it as the spec motor for Mini's down here in OZ.

I tried to email you as you requested but the email function has been disabled.

Cheers

Noz

Yeah, well, that guy was much younger and less educated then- plus he was dealing with a four vent Johnson.

Now that we've got higher quality comm drops and two-vent motors (where you can actually view the comm and brushes), we know that water dipping improves the brush-to-comm contact patch, but at the expense of damaging the comm surface.

And back then, a good Johnson ran maybe 14,000 RPM at 5 volts on a modern dyno. Now we get almost 17,000 pretty regularly, with about the same torque characteristics.

Hey felles, what machine are you using to test the motors?

I finally got around to running some motors on my Turbo Dyno. I burnt up a few trying to resolve the load settings. Even at the lowest the machine will go, it seems to be straining the motors too much.
