Even more interesting is that they released and R kit and didn't address the C hubs. Maybe its just us silly gaijin westerners who find them fragile 🤦🏻‍♂️

To be fair, the racing in Japan (that I've seen on Youtube – never visited) seems to be done at slower speeds with tamer motors compared to what I experience here in Europe. But it is worrying that multiple recent Tamiya cars have fragile parts (the TA08 as well) – I hope the TB EVO 8 is sturdier

The only fix was , that in the R-manual they suggest you to put in the insert with superglue for durability.
But makes the sense of an interchangeable insert somehow questionable....

The new-new 54995 and the harder compound 54999 are very, very soft. I would say softer than S-grips. I have found even the harder 54999 still have high wear rate on carpet, but the grip is very good. I think the higher traction of this tire has given the M08 a slight advantage over the M07 on high traction carpet. M07 is still king in most other situations.
Thank you very much Dan,
that is very interesting advice on the new tires. I expected them not be weaker than the S-Grip. So we will see, if the production of the S-Grip will then run out. Seems weird, that it is rare at the moment and more expensive than the newer, weaker radial versions.
For 2 S-Grips, I can meanwhile almost get a set of 4 preglued Touring car tires on wheels. Oh Tamiya!

If the sidewalls are that weak Dan, Supergluing the edges and a quite firm insert is the key to not going into grip roll, I guess?

Anyway, thanks for the helpful info!
I ordered 2 sets of the new compounds for testing.

Kind regards,
Matthias

Finally, I had the opportunity to race my new M08R fort he first time on nice black ETS carpet. I could run the car in and improve the times in 5 of 6 heats. In the 6th I was involved in crashes, as well as in the 1st A-final, starting from place 4. The guy in front of me was a guest driver running an m06 with a yeah racing long span conversion kit. He beat my best time of heat 5 in the 6th one, where I was involved in some crashes. Unfortunately, this was the fastest run so far, and probably I had also improved my times automatically with a clean run. 1st starting place was our actual Mini champion with his M07, followed by our friend running his M07 too. Both are my usual rivals and in the last 2 yers usually too fast form me! Especially on the large outdoor tracks, my M07 has not the pace to fight. But this weekend, it was RWD time!

1st A-final surprised everyone with an early beep, so I could pass the M06 in the inside already at the start. I followed the fast guys, but during some overlapping an friend let me pass before the 180° left bent after the straight, just to brake too late and hit me shortly after straight at the side in the apex of the corner. (It even loosened my transponder fixing) Shit happens. In the end, after some more bumps with a hard to pass midfield guy, I finished 5th behind our champion, the M06, and 2 other M07. But I was still confident of the R. It was precise to drive, although showing a little underdamped lift on the inside front wheel, most probably caused by the #200 cst red oil in front. I changed to 300cst in heat 6 and the 1st A-final. For Final 2 and 3 I decided to drive less aggressive not taking the first opportunity to pass. A wise decision! I stayed 4th after the start, this time I could have a clean run and let the others have the mistakes and bad luck. I finished as 2nd, 5 seconds behind our champion, with a best lap of 14,327sec., while he could set a 14,270s. I was quite happy already, just starting to unleash the potential of the M08R. Luckily I could leave another buddy behind me, which was my intention for the last race weekend in this year, to keep my 2nd place in our 2022 Mini championship. But he was very fast, too, and we had some very close racing in the mid of the final. For Final 3, I just wanted again a clean run and stay before him. Our champion skipped the run, as everything was safe for him after 2 wins. So he lend his car to another clubguy with our permittance ( you canīt motivate enough guys to drive the mini class). Surprisingly to myself I kept cool at the start and wanted to stay behind the M06 in the first corner, not risking anything too early. After a clean start , Jochen was immediately pushing hard from behind, so I gave in on a corner where he was already beneath me, just to grab him again 4 or 5 corners later. Great fun! After that I chased the very fast M06 guy before me. While I was thinking about the best corner trying to pass, he hit a corner marker to hard in the carussel, and flipped immediately. Also our club guy driving the pole setter car made a mistake and fell back. So it was me being 2nd now and chasing the M07 of my friend S. Ferschke. It was a clean run and I came closer on the end of the 6 minutes, finishing 1,5 sec. behind him. What a race, now having the 4st 4 cars with 25 laps and within 6 seconds. Sorry fort he long writeup, but maybe some of you are still reading now: Get you an M08, itīs so much fun and challenging, when the conditions are right! Kind regards,

Matthias

P.S. Finally I could also finish my Karmann body, and bring some oldschool looks into the A-final.

Thanks for the report ruebiracer !
I had my first outing with my M08-R yesterday and was spending a lot of time fiddling with the setup.
Surprisingly for me, the kit springs (bronze) front and rear worked better on carpet and I still need to work on selecting the right tires. I was using Sweep 33 front and rear which were providing far too much grip and I had to glue not only the flanks but also part of the tread on the fronts to prevent traction rolling.
Can you share your setup if it’s not too much to ask? I am also using the same electronics as you, Tamiya Euro Cup Germany required Dragster combo. I ended up securing the ESC with straps as it wouldn’t stick with Servo tape

Thank you very much Fabian, seems I was so happy to write this ttoo long report. But nice, that you read it!
I will record my setup the next days and post it here, no problem. And will also give some technical details. 2 years ago the layout was quite the same, and I raced my std. M08 already there. Have to look up the times again, at least the fastest lap. But the car felt much easier to drive this time, and I was in the ballpark with the top 3 regarding the fastest laps.
And regarding traction rolling, we all had to glue the front tires, too. TT class even glued the slicks into the outer profile around the edge, as you did. For me it was enough on the S-Grips to glue half of the first profile thread. And tire saucing I only do on the 3 inner block row on front.
So you did run bronze prings all around? I switched to the blue font ones already in the beginning, as the manual suggested.
Regarding the ESC, the Big block: I think I used tape on the lower side in addition, as it really is a bit risky to only use the stiffener for tape.
I had my 10 year old nephew with me and forgot the spare parts at home on sunday, so I could do no proper testing so far with the "R". Iīm sure, there is much more potential to unveal.
Kind regards,
Matthias

Hi guys, here my setup sheet from the last weekend. I checked my other one from my old M08 on the same track in 2020.
Best lap reduced from 14,621 to 14,244 seconds. Quite nice, at least for me my R seems faster than my old M08 already on the first few batteries.
Donīt take it too serious, I had no real test time and just built a mix of the R-kit setup and some findings from the M08 thread, like 4° caster block with 0° uprights, soft stabilizers front and rear. Another thing I used were the 1,3° skid angle in the rear, as we discussed it some pages before. Should make more sense on an RWD car than on the M07 with a undriven rear axle. I had them lying, so they went in. Would need a real back to back test now to get a feeling. Droop I measured over ride height, until the tires leave the ground.
Kind regards, Matthias

License plate was also on.
The carbon battery holders I built out for modified originals to save my body on a side impact. As I was hit quite hard in the side, this saved my new body from a nice carbon dent. Maybe useful for some of you, too.

It has just the bottom cut out to not touch the ground while cornering. Itīs a mod I use on my M07, too.
Kind regards, Matthias

Any suggestions for a sensible RWD bodyshell to start with on a small carpet track?

I'm thinking MX-5 as it seems quite common (and Satoshi Maezumi aka Paisen RC ran it in his demo video).

Both the new and original Miatas work well, original is 210 wheelbase and new one is 225.. On small technical carpet track I ran the short wheelbase with the Alpine A110 body and did really well. Car was very agile with lots of steering

Original Euno MX-5 was 225mm as well. Still have one unpainted but will stick with the new MX-5.

I thought it was 210.. it’s very narrow wheel arches right? S grips can rub the fenders if I recall

Looking into getting a M08 what are the biggest difference between a M06 vs M08?

Think I've seen a few at TCS run the older MX-5 but not sure if there was tire clearance issues.

Schs2013, the M08 has the motor in front of the rear axle where as the M06 has the motor behind the rear axle. The M08 also has better plastics, weight distribution, and adjustable gearing.
