How Hot Is Too Hot?????
Hi,
I have recently bought a RAYTEK Laser Beam Thermometer to measure the temps of my electric motors and ESC. What i would like to know is how hot is too hot??? I recently measured temps around 70 Degrees on the can and wonder if this is too hot or not.. My ESC was only reading temps of around 45 degrees at the heatsinks, i thought that that was good.
Any feedback is much appreciated..

Thanks again sigearhead,
Is there not an "Ideal" Temperature range that one would like his motor to run at???

Gear your electric motors by how they are performing, if you race on a short tight technical track with a ton of sharp turns then you might want to gear it low so you'll have alotta punch outta the corners or if you race on a big fast track where your mostly on throttle, gear it up untill you feel it loose some power then back down a tooth or two. Use your manuals recommendations as a starting point. Good Luck.

I was wondering the same question! I recently went up to the 19t spec class and I feel i'm running it well overgeared (88/26) but it still spinns the tires and has great acceleration out the hole. Only draw back has been how hot the motor was after running it. I'll probally gear down one or two teeth to see what happens!

I have a couple peak HellFire RS24 motors, (same as core stock) and When I run it in my TC3, it gets HOT HOT. I think this is just the characteristic of the motor. The brushes are not getting burned and I cut the come probably every weekend, but that is normal. I have seen it as hot as 190 f. It is usually around 165.

My motor runs sooooooooo hot. It is so hot after 1 4minute race, if you touch it you will get burned almost instantly.
So, besides heatsinks, what can I do to make it run cooler

I've had magnets unglue themselves... i found that araldite holds up better
My fantom 11x3 now runs quite hot, of course dependent on gearing, but no damage so far
Microspeed, i've heard of people cooling their motors down with ice cubes before races, and ages ago someone mentioned this 'freeze spray' they used.
As long as you have a decent heatsink and mounting plate, as well as adequate airflow, i'd assume all would be sweet

What motor are you running and what spur/Pinion are you running? That will give us something to work on.

Cutting the body out
Has anyone tried cutting out a "Grill " opening in the front of the car to let more air in. Not a hole in the windshield like a nitro car.
Just a small 1/4" to 3/8" slot somewhere above the bumper to let in a little more air.
This isn't a suggestion, It's a question.

I've tried the ice trick. It does keep the motor cool, but for me, it ran oh so slow.
My motors run hot, but as long as there is no discoloration or smoke, then it's ok.

Matrix Motor
I have seen alot of the faster stock (expert) racers using the Matrix.
I'm running a P2K2 in a HPI Pro-3 with a 6.99 overall gear ratio
(Spur~pinion x 2.25). The motor gets a little hot but not too bad. I can go 2 weekend before I will skim cut the com. The brushes always look like new.
Should I gear down? (6.80-6.70)
Thanks,
