metal spur gear for touring car?? pro and cons
 

does any body run a metal spur gear on their touring car?? what are the pros and what are the cons? I'm looking to pick up a bigger spur gear for my tc7.1 so i can run a 3.5t motor just to bash around for fun.

no if you want durability switch to 48 pitch plastic. car wouldnt be as smooth though

no real con to running a aluminum spur I do that on my tc 6.1 … smooth no issues from me I have a redline 4.5

why do you think you need a metal gear? just wondering.

Metal spur gears are not really recommended because they will cause loud noise, radio interference, excessive pinion wear, and will not give in an accident to protect the motor on top of being way heavier than plastic......

That is why you get a brass pinion with it. When 2 same metals as gears are used the molecule surface structure will grab into each other and the wear will be huge. Just stick with plastic, for sure with 48pitch they have proven to withstand the forces.

But I must admit, the price seems ok for a 70xx type machined piece of aluminium.

So, lets start off. Those gears are being sold to a specific group of drivers. Drifters. They are concerned with noise, and looks, rather than actual performance. "The market for those gears, is not a racer". But that doesnt' really get into the reasons why this would be a problem.

First off, you can't treat them well. Metal gears are a wonderful thing. But for metal gears to be useful, effective, and long lasting, they need to be bathed in some kind of lubricant. While there are some r/c cars where this could be done... it's very uncommon.

Stronger gears, aren't always a good thing. Soft spots in the drivetrain, absorb driveline shock. Plastic gears also deal with misalignment better. The soft surfaces are plastic, and bend, then rebound back into position, aluminum and brass do not do that. (Brass is a great pinion material, and rubs and flows a bit, and wears in... But is also heavy)

Plastic is also lighter, and the spur is one of the fastest moving parts of your driveline, meaning it has a large effect on the acceleration of your car.

The long story short, is metal gears are less durable in the long run, provided you don't get "anything on them". They're less durable in the short run, because instead of absorbing, bending, and allowing crud to pass through them, they get damaged, unlike plastic spurs. And they're heavier, providing more inertia for bad things to happen against.

Especially for bashing, I wouldn't use them.
