Side note I am running Associated white front and black rear springs on the stock buggy atm and Associated grey and Yokomo Green on the mod.
Have not tried the +1.0mm hole, why not just run a 3 or 4 hole piston? I feel like we are getting trolled just like we did with the front wing.

Trolled by the front wing?

The +1.0mm hole acts differently. The entire surface area of the holes help dictate the static feel (around ride height), while the individual hole size, qty and placement dictate how the dampening "packs up" or stiffens with quick movement. The oil has to "fight" to converge to the nearest hole. Less hole, more fighting, more resistance. Further hole distance, more fighting in one direction, more resistance. A smaller hole (1.0mm hole), same amount of hole, smaller hole, more fighting. And nothing is linear either. A 1.0mm hole won't pack 2x what a 2.0mm hole will, it'll be much greater of an effect.

So... the +1mm hole is pretty popular with a lot of people. Car feels softer are ride height (more grip and quicker), but still packs similarly despite the softer ride height feel (lands just as good). I run the +1mm hole on my 4wd, but I'm still liking normal 1.6/1.7 on my 2wd.

Thanks for the explenation! I was trying to wrap my head around it. For my 17.5 2wd buggy I have been very happy with my 1.6/1.7 on high grip, however for my 4wd on lower grip I am thinking about trying the +1mm pistons out.

Has anyone seen this happen before? My car lost an insert and the shim in the middle of practice. Right next to the car when the car stopped was the hinge pin invent and nothing was broke.

fwiw, I finally took my car to the track and it appears the ride height\springs may have settled. It was 24mm 24.5mm or so at first. After a few battery packs I measured it again. I think its around 22mm. I haven't done a full look over the car to see if something else may have happened but it appears it has settled.

New springs sag and take set, they all do it.

I apologize if this had been asked but I just got a 22 4.0 and looking for some front wheels. I usually run black de wheels on everything I own but don’t see any de wheels to run. Is there a different de wheel I can run?

Frank,
Thanks for explaining the pistons with the 1.0. One more question, do you prefer the
1.4 x 3 and 1.0 x 1
or
1.6 x 2 and 1.0 x 1

Saw setups with both types of pistons and curious the difference in feel between the 4 hole vs 3 hole

I'm waiting for that story too!!

Just picked up a 2nd hand 4.0, rebuilding it to DPs TLR Cup setup (buggy was built for astroturf) & have a few questions:

Spindle ball stud (low mount) - is that the ball stud in B3 of the manual?? (& needing to be changed from kit setup)

Bump steer spacer (0.5mm) - is that the spacer under the spindle ball stud?? (& needing to be changed from kit setup)

Ackerman ball stud (low mount) - is that the ball stud in B2 of the manual?? (not needing to be changed from kit setup)

Ackerman spacer (0mm) - is that the spacer under the ball stud above?? (& needing to be removed from kit setup)

Axle spacing (+1mm) - please explain??

TIA for answers!

I haven't seen a DE wheel yet for the 4.0. No 12mm with the correct offset. I was looking for an orange front myself.
Buy a TLR white front for the 4.0 and dye it with some "Rit Dye." Works great. You can probably find some videos on it. Pot of hot water and the dye. Works great!!

Great post. Wouldn't the extra holes pack up faster in the rear causing less grip also than a 2 hole?

I'm running 3x1.3 +1.0 front and 3x1.4 +1.0 rear in 4wd. In 2wd, I'm running regular 1.6/1.7 again.

No, not less grip, IMO.

I agree, the goofy pistons don't seem to really get into the travel as much.
