For 17.5 I'm running 28/69... I've seen some running up to 30/69, but plan on running a fan no matter how conservative your gearing is. I had a really hard time keeping temps down with several motors, including an R1. In speaking with a couple team drivers, apparently the internal drive ratio isn't quite at that sweet spot and causes things to run hot. My drive train is extremely free and I tried everything from 30 down to 26, played with timing, you name it. Only fix was a fan.

It's a bummer that you need a fan in stock, but that did resolve the issue. Other than temps, the car is treating me very well. Really enjoying it!

I can't seem to get my steering right. I set my toe to 0* and it appears that one wheel is out of whack. I'm going to redo my steering turnbuckles and re-check my steering link. Should the horn be installed as per the manual - being one click off center, or do people usually center the horn?

I do mine one click off center per the manual.

Do you have a hard time getting your battery out with this wiring setup? Looks like it would be pretty tight....?

Also, is this still the recommended servo horn?

My battery is extremely easy to get in and out, if I need to. There is no bar across the Exotek battery strap, so the wires fit in between the V when I swing it up. The wiring is also not as low as it looks in the picture, it's an inch or so above my battery.

And yes I am using the tlr recommended aluminum Servo horn and it works fine.

Awesome... I missed that when I looked at it the first time. Makes sense. Thank you for the clarification.

Hmmm... I was running 31/69 and barely got my Fantom motor up to 145* even with 89-92* ambient temps after 6 minutes. Thing is a rocket though! Fans are for TC!

I'm running 76 spur and 24-28 pinions depending on track size.

Ugh I wish I could gear that high! A guy at the track completely smoked his Trinity Monster, which is when the whole fan discussion started there. Against advice from numerous people, I tried running without a fan and could not keep temps reasonable at all, even running 27 and 28. Like I said, a few of the sponsored guys chalked it up to the internal gear ratio.

I'm running an R1, but I'll try a Fantom next. Are you running their v2 or v3? I'm assuming you're running the the R and not the T?

I've got a 3.0, but have been running a 13.5 since the 3.0 was released.

I race on a pretty big indoor track, and am running Tekin RSX esc (blinky mode) and Tekin 13.5 Gen 2 motor.

Gearing has pretty consistently been 26 / 76 or 78. Motor end bell timing varies between 25 and 30 degrees. All depends on track layout and ambient temps.

Track layout right now has two big doubles with a short run up, and it has been hot, so I'm running 26/78 with ~27 degrees of timing. If temperature would allow I'd turn the timing up a bit for more speed at the end of our long straight, but ambient starting temp has been too high for that. If this layout stays around when the temps drop, I'll be turning that timing up closer to 30.

Internal gear ratio really doesn't matter, people really should talk in terms of final drive (spur divided by pinion times trans ratio). Then you can talk gear ratios regardless of brands.

Lol I’m well aware of the fdr, but yes, internal ratio absolutely plays into the efficiency of a drive train.
