Plastic pinions for 17.5 buggy?
 

So I saw a YouTube video uploaded by Amain today showing off these pinion gears....

...and it made me curious as to whether or not they could benefit a car in the 17.5 class or would it just add a weak spot?

Just looking for some opinions or experience with using plastic gears in the past.

I run em on carpet with a slipper eliminator, no problems at all, run really smooth and quiet. A believe there are alot of people running them in 17.5 with no problems, probably the reason amain started selling them because 175rc has been selling them for a while.

Awesome then I think I'll try a set for my rb5 :). I really like the color coordination too.

I just picked up some of the Parma ones tonight. Not that I can tell the difference but I like the idea of the a quieter mesh.

come to norcal on any race night and see how many of us use the plastic pinions. they've been around for a while. i've been using them for a couple years and have stripped one (it was not a parma, but one of the cheaper alternatives).

I believe these are spur gears from 1/24 slot cars. They seem to hold up well enough for stock racing.

Some of our locals have been using them with great success. I might even try them....

I've been running the 175rc pinions for a few months. They've held up great on medium bite clay (OCRC raceway). And I run a slipper eliminator. I like them. I was running the Team Trinity pinions before. A 33 tooth pinion in the Trinity was about 2 grams and the 175rc ones were 1 gram. Little lighter, and half the price. My only gripe is I have to look up the tooth count because they are color coded and not printed on the pinion. Pretty petty gripe in my opinion. I would advise people to try them.

yes they are, i have not used them in RC applications, but have in 1/24 slot cars.

Cahoza, Koford, ARP, Pro Slot have their own. Parma and American line imo are inferior and not my preference at all in lower classes of slot car racing due to lack of precision and durability.

Thanks for everyone's input on this :) I seriously had no clue how popular they already were. I'm definitely picking up a set to try.

I might even try one with a 13.5 motor as well.

It'll be a while before I can do a race night at Norcal though. I'm hoping to at least practice soon if my recovery goes well.

The fastest guys at my track run them, I'm still running trinity pinions, perhaps I'll give one a try too.

They are good, just ran one last night, sooo much more quiet.

If I wanted to try these out for my 17.5 B6, would I try the same tooth number as I would run with a regular pinion or do I gear up/down when using these for pinions? For example, I'm running a 29T factory team pinion on my Fantom 17.5 V2R, so would I use a 29T 175RC one too?

Run the same gearing.

Well the gears themselves don't change the gear ratio so I'd start with the same size gear you're currently running, test and check for Temps. And if the Temps are better than with a steel/alum pinion then you can go up a tooth.

But I think these are more just to aid in acceleration with the decreased rotational mass.
