Unhappy Kyosho lazer ZX-5 problems.

Hi all.

I've just started assembling my ZX-5, and I barely got into the second step of the manual before I hit a snag, and I was hoping that someone could possibly shed some light on this matter.

In step 2 of the manual, you have the assembly for the front one-way, which is precisely what i'd like to install in the front. Here's the problem: part 4 (main diff gear) is supposed to fit over part 56, and should then be attached with 4 small screws... But the opening of the main diff gear will not allow it to fit over part 56 as the manual suggests. Does the center of the front gear need to be dremeled-out to make it fit, or am I going about this the wrong way? (See pics below.)





Also, when assembling the rear diff, I noticed that the diff ball pressure plates are quite small in diameter--to the point where they only cover about 3/5 of the diff balls. Is this normal? What's more is that right up until the diff is tightened, the center gear seems to "float" between the metal assembly parts, and there's nothing to seemingly keep the plastic gear centered. If someone could please tell me what I'm doing wrong, or offer tips, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Uuuuhhh...dude....there are three gears in the kit. For the one-way or the spool, you use the gear with the bigger hole. Ball diffs use the gears with the smaller hole.



Also...you should really stick to posting in the proper thread (Kyosho electric offroad ). You'll get more help and probably faster. Don't go starting a new thread every time you have a question.

Hi Joe.

Yes, I was going to post in the Kyosho offroad forum, but it's already horribly long as it is (with several different topics overlapping.) I had already asked a question in that thread previously, and it just got lost in the shuffle.

As per the pic you posted, there is one gear with a noticeably larger center diameter... All three of the diff gears in my blister pack are exactly the same... Well at least I can be content knowing that the screw-up is kyosho's and not mine. Still annoying as hell though.

I beleive this is the gear that had a larger center hole. This is the gear that is used for the oneway.

That's what I was thinking. Take the rear diff apart to see if that is your missing one-way gear with the larger center hole.

Hi Fabulous. D'oh, quite right... My bad. This effectively alleviates both problems. I could have sworn the 3 gears looked identical.

On a similar note, I've heard a few people mention potential gear-stripping on the spur gear shaft where the bevel gear meets the diff. I noticed that there's a good 2mm play between the bevel and the collar with the bearing... I'm wondering if it might be best to add a few washers to lessen the slop?

Is that after fully assembled? There should not be any back-and-forward play. Maybe a half a mill at the most. Recheck your assembly. Mine does not have this excessive play.

We covered the shaft play in the Kyosho offroad thread. Mine had a lot of play also. I (think) I just put an extra shim on the side of the slipper plate under the black plastic piece that holds the bearing. I'm not positive where I put it but I know for a fact I did put a shim on there somewhere.

The play only exists when the slipper assembly is out of the car, this is NOTHING to worry about, when the car is built, this is not a problem.

also, the screws about which you speak are labeled correctly in the manual, however, the screw shown in the CAD drawing are not the correct screw...the manual shows a M2x? philips but the correct screw is a smaller head screw...you'll find it in one of the bags...so, essentially, the Kyosho drafter screwed up and put the wrong screw in the drawing...

good luck..

Also, dont use the crappy diff lube included in the kit....use associated.

-dont tighten the diff too tight right away, or you'll flat-spot the balls.
-make sure you shim the diffs correctly (i.e. tight, but not too tight)...if you dont, you'll strip the ring and pinion gears in the bulheads....especially off of jumps.

Mine still moved too much when everything was tightened down. So you'll just have to put it together and check it.

Hi Cornerspeed.

Indeed, the slop in the spur shaft parts diminished greatly when assembled. It seems to be down to about 0.5mm, just as you said it should be. I'll leave it as-is for now, and make any necessary changes if I see that there's any premature wear on the gears as I run.

I'm a little bit surprised that Kyosho neglected to give proper set-up info for the ZX-5 in the assembly manual. It would definitely be an asset to know how all the different parts and adjustment holes affect handling & performance.

Yea, I was dis-appointed as well. Going blind with set-ups. And there seems to be no factory sugestions from team drivers.
