Wow!

Being a Tamiya fan, I am a bit concerned with all these remakes...but this one is a real shocker! The Frog...as a micro!

I'll bet any money it has the crappy friction shocks Tamiya loves so damn much. At least they gave it ball bearings rather than crappy plastic bushings like most of their entry level cars. That's an unexpected bonus. I guess all the pressure from Losi and Associated made them go a bit above and beyond to keep them good enough to compete in the ever-growing micro market.

It's a frog in spirit. Not a 1:1 scale conversion. It actually looks like it has really good suspension travel. Look at how long the suspension arms are. Just wish they had made it 1/18th versus another odd scale 1/16th. We have enough problems now getting enough 1/18th without splitting it with 1/16th as well.

Well, the half 8 Mini Inferno seems to be on the same level as the Tamiya 1/16th scale so I think Tamiya was trying to push it to compete with that instead of with the Mini-T and 18T. No doubt they'll appear on the same track in the same class though. Right now a direct comparison would be odd because they are technicly different scales (But then again no magazine hesitated to compare a 4WD stadium truck to a 2WD stadium truck - Mini-T/RC18T...). The half 8 Mini Inferno is 1/16th too...so I think Tamiya is just keeping the old rivalry burning with Kyosho by releasing this buggy in the 1/16th class.

Maybe.. though magazines may be stupid enough, we racers know better with 4wd versus 2wd in the dirt. Especially when the Half 8 runs with more cells for one.

If anything, I think Tamiya would make a new event in their Tamiya series for these. It cant be for nolstalgia as again we all have noticed, this isn't a scaled down version of the frog (thank gawd).

A scaled down Frog would have been disasterous. It would be a very novel idea...but in all honesty the Frog sucked for anything but tearing up the front yard and getting people into R/C.

I really don't think Tamiya would try to 'compete' with Associated and Losi, they have their large share of the markets in different parts of the world, so I suspect that Tamiya is more inclined to have a car out similar in size to Kyosho who are also from Japan.

Exactly...

Tamiya has been out of racing seriously in the off-road realm for years. Their only real entry into the off-road racing world would be the TNX. I don't think they would want to use this to race against Losi and Associated, but they are making a stab at their huge market share. Tamiya is known for their bash worthy durability, and their newbie friendly construction and reliability. Mabye this is their entry into the micro bashing market... it makes more sense than an assault on the seasoned racing community.

That thing sure looks like it has the suspension travel down. Wonder what they'll offer in the way of hop-ups, and subsequent releases.

What a pain that thing would be to work on. Not to mention there's no kickup built into the front end. It's not going to handle worth a damn on any kind of a rough track.
