Default which charger??? in the market for a new one

checked out one of my magazines where they tested/reviewed the top chargers .....
my thoughts are
duratrax ice
aps racing dyno charge

just looking for something that will do 6amps plus and that will work well with dead shorted batts....

other than those mentioned above are there other chargers out there that will give me what i need at the price i want ,,,,, under 150.00

thanks

I have to agree, the Duratrax Ice is a great charger for the price, haven't had a problem yet (fingers crossed). I had Dynamite Prohpet Plus LCD Peak, whihc was good, but it eventually got fried (short at the track and literally caught fire!)

I have an Ice and I love it. I have never had a false peak with the charger to date. My other charger is a Victor and it will do what the Victor does, plus it does LiPo cells if/when you get them.

I swapped from a Protrak to the LRP Pulsar 2 and I personally think they are the best value for money.

When your running off of 12V you are using a 12V Power supply, hence, I would assume you DO have a power supply. When searching out power supplies I usually recommend that you pick one up that is rated a good amount higher than you need since as time goes on you may upgrade to another charger and run two for awhile or pick up one with higher requirements.

personally I've had a bulldog 30 Amp power supply and have had great results. I've run my LRP comp1 along with my ICE charger without a hicup. Last week at the track I even helped a fellow racer as they forgot their power cord so I ran an extra LRP Comp 2 with the above chargers without a flinch.

Sorry to semi hijack the thread: Back on topic.

I'm a big fan of the ICE charger especially as my addiction progresses knowing that I can purchase a lipo and have the ability to maintain it. I do also like the LRP chargers. The limiting factor on the LRP is from memory the 3 profiles. The ice has 10 and I regularly use 5.

the two most popular charger at the track is the ICE and the muchmore CTX. i got both.

i prefer the ice better. more options, more information, more memory slots. and cheaper aswell.

Doomah: Sorry I was so blatantly ignorant that you were using a gel cell. I used one for awhile as a basher out in the 'field' but once I started going to tracks primarily I went with a stnd power supply. Advantages?? Good question. Did I notice a big difference in charger functioning? Not really but I also didn't load my gell cell as hard as I do my power supply due to multiple chargers and a higher amp charge rate. I have read that having a weak power supply or a fading one can make the charger more sensitive to false peak. I guess one advantage of a bulldog is that piece of mind knowing that your not getting any flux in voltage over the course of the day. Other than that not having to carry something acid filled is nice. (even though the cell is sealed and non-vented) you drop it and things change drastically.

-anyway, sorry I didn't pick up on the gell cell thingy. I was just trying to show how narrow minded I can sometimes be..lol

For the heck of it read this similar thread over as well

Hobbytalk Battery charger thread

also as far as power supplies go you really can't beat a bulldog 30amp but it is rather large and a bit heavy. I have a project box from radio shack with banana jacks in it wired to clips so that I can have my PS on the floor and not take up as much pit space. Another alternative is Competition electronics power supply which is rated at 23 amps and looks to be rather compact for the rating.

Comp Elec power supply 23A $114

Bulldog Power Supply Index from Tower: Shows 15A at $132 and 30A at $170

Rivergate Distribution Direct: I picked up a 30Amp scratch and Dent model with warranty for $130. Shows 15 and 30 amp available.

Duratrax ICE charger but don't forget the Temp Sensor

Keep in mind when ordering from tower the deals you get with the coupons. That may sway you from buying from rivergate direct but either way the information is in your hands.

Enjoy your new charger!
