Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

there was a layout change at my local track and I know a few guys reverting back to a standup transmission and liking it. I'm still runnin laydown (TLR) and I find my car to be harder to drive and more twitchy. =\ like the guy above me said... it's more sensitive to setup.

I have a question: thinking of going back to a slipper setup to reduce a bit of the twitch from the drivetrain input. Has anyone done this? I don't think I can get used to a slipper eliminator

If it were me, I'd keep the eliminator and go back to standup. The acceleration and punch gained from running the slipper eliminator is more important to me than corner speed from the laydown, especially if it's going to be twitchy! But I'm not the fastest, most consistent driver either. So that's my thought.

Why is it taking so long for the TLR332064 Narrow Gears Set to come in stock? First it was listed as an April release, now it's been pushed back til mid May?! As far as I know, they've never been in stock since they were announced. Any updates would be appreciated. I'm looking to upgrade my standard stand up 3.0 buggy to this gear set for stock racing. I was planning on keeping my stock CVA shafts and different outdrives, assuming there's no compatibility issues......

These gears should have no compatibility issues. I am currently running an SR differential (minus the narrow gears) in my laydown 22 3.0. It was a direct drop-in.

If you're feeling ambitious, have a little time, and a steady hand, you could always modify a normal set of gears to be narrow. It's not as easy as a $15 order from Horizon but it's cheaper and would fulfill your need.

There is no issue running them in a stand up or laydown, I have had them in both. I am using composite outdrives but the standard outdrives should fit no problem

When it comes down to it, we just sold WAY more than we estimated. Production lead time is 90days, but we're doing all we can to expedite. We did get a shipment in December (with the 22 3.0 SR's, but sold out by early January.

Thanks for the answer. I guess I missed that inventory window back then. I should've backordered them I suppose... I'd prefer to run the factory created gears so I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer til they're in stock again.

Will the new complete SR diff include the narrow diff gear or the normal width diff gear?

TLR232071 Complete Ball Diff Spec Racer: 22 3.0 SR

Thx

Just getting back into racing and picked up a used 22 3.0 that I will be putting HW JustStock electronics in. Ordered the direct drive (slipper eliminator) kit today and was wondering if someone could give me an idea of where to start with gearing? Will have the 69T spur and Hobbywing 17.5 G2 motor in it.

Depends on your track. We were run a small tight track for our winter season and the layout was changed every week so I was running from a 27 to 31 pinion depending on the layout.
I would grab a 72 spur, they were out of stock for the first 3 months of the year and that screwed me a few times

Ok I'll see if I can find a 72 and thanks for the suggestions on pinion.

I was running a 69t spur and either 28 or 31t pinion depending on the track and layout.

I also found the Hobbywing 17.5 to be a dog... actually talked to several other people at a couple tracks and they found the same. I even tried tuning and shimming the HW motor and it was still slow. I have no problems with their mod motors, but I think their stock ones suck. I switched to Schuur motor and wow, huge difference. I've also heard great things about the SMC motors. So if you haven't opened the HW motor yet, I'd think about returning it. A Schuur, Fantom, Trinity, etc. is only about $10 more. The SMC ones are actually cheaper.

If you would've read his full statement, he said that he bought the car with the electronics in it.

Box stock setup to start and then tuned to your driving style with minor adjustments .
I got the sr built it to the manuals spec and ran it. It was great and got me finishing mid Bmains weekly (I consider that pretty good consider a field of 25+ drivers, only my second season racing buggy on carpet, and only having raced for about 2 years) and I didnt change anything.
The car is amazingly planted and easy to drive when completely stock
