Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

From what I have heard it will be a new chassis and gearbox at minimum.

Be a bit of a mikey take for a new car to be out so soon after the 3.0

Seeing as they never use the .5 option in their naming scheme, I think it will be called 4.0. But hopefully it's really only a couple parts to upgrade... the front and rear hubs, as far as I'm concerned, I probably won't change anyway!

Missed the boat on the laydown thing. Now it's a hard sell to buy a 3.0 + laydown conversion when everything else out there is far less $$.

Another interesting question, where'd their race team go? Phend is the only 5-star guy left.

Here is my guess,
New chassis and tranny case, drivetrain stays basically the same so we can use the SR stuff
3.0 truck rear hubs and front spindles
current front end
New Rear arms that are in some of the SR kits with shock holes in front of arms as well as rear.
New suspension hangers and sterring just to make it cost just enough to convert so we have to buy a new car.

What is the effect of having more/fewer internal shock limiters? For example, in the 22 3.0, if the front shock stroke is 22mm with 2mmm internal limiters or 22mm stroke without limiters, it's still a 22mm stroke either way. So what effect does having internal limiters have?

I run on a hard packed, wet, smooth ultra high grip indoor clay track. Tires are everything.
You run at IRH don't you?

After running the stock 3.0, both carpet and dirt laydowns in various configurations i really enjoyed the handling of the spec racer. Forgiving and easy to drive. RIP little buggy.

Yessir. Part time. I go when I can.

Also, question for the thread:

my top shaft has play going in and out that is causing a tiny bit of 'noise' in the drivetrain. Solutions? Fix? Normal?

Default Servo behind mounts

Do you have to use a low profile servo to make this mod work? I tried a regular size servo, but the horn hits the top plate.

Low pro or regular is the same here... you have to dremel the top plate for clearance.

Default gearing, start.

Built 22 3.0 and need to decide on gearing. I run on a clay/dirt indoor track, that is rather small (no big stretches at all). What would be a good starting point?
