Traxxas Slash 4x4 for Track
As Ive been told many times before to go ahead and buy a Losi SCTE kit I refuse to do so. Im out to build what I got for a track Short Course Truck and that is a Slash 4x4. Ive ordered a STRC LCG chassis for it and am now trying to figure out what motor and esc combo to go with? Some have said Tekin Pro 4 4000kv and a MMP set up others have said just to do the MMP ESC and Motor so at this point Im pretty confused on what to go with. The truck will mainly see an indoor clay track. Any opinions?

The pro4 4000 is a great motor, it will do well for you. A lot of people drop in the 4300 or 4600 but often end up dialing it down or having to drive more conservatively.
I assume you mean the MMP (mamba max pro). I have used them, they are OK, and can be found on the cheap, but would not be my first choice in there. Depending on the servo and receiver you partner it up with it could suffer brownout issues. For a few $$ I would just put a glitch buster cap on it to make issue harder to manifest, cheap enough to just head off at the pass.
Not sure the STRC low CG kit has real advantage over the Traxxas conversion. I am sure the Traxxas kit is far cheaper to in effect lower the battery. But not a topic I have put any hands on time with, so I could be way off.
I would as a whole suggest just get what you need to make it run, and upgrade as parts fail. The truck is durable and you will save a ton of money with this approach without losing on fun factor.

A team mate of mine has a $750.00 strc lcg slash 4x4 with more up grades than pep boys . He is an ocd engineer , trust me when I say its well done. He has a mmp and pro 4 4000kv and a savox ( glitch fest) . He has a tough time keeping up with both of us ..... (scte and a st410) . The hobbywing sc combo will straight own a mmp / pro 4 combo . Now , a rx8 and a pro 4 is a good combo as well . The 4000 is too slow for all the tracks around me , I run the 4700 when the track flows , and a 4300 hd when its technical , or has big jumps right after corners. The 4000 may be good for your track , but see what kv the locals are running...

I was in the same position as you OP, I waned a slash bad for its tough reputation and cost for what you get, but I found the wonderful used market section here and ended up with a killer deal for a SCTE hopped up with a Pro 4 and RX8 and all the goodies cheaper than I could have built a Slash.
But I still look back now having bought one (coming in the mail today) and realized the slash is still a legit truck. And talking and hitting my local track daily has made me realize with the motor ESC combo I have I will need to down tune it for my local track. But the 4600 and RX8 will be a crap ton of fun for my neighborhood street.

The Slash is fine. The slash platinum (roller) has everything you will need to compete. You will absolutely want some electronics though. Tekin RX8 and Futaba S9342HV would be perfect.

Im not going to disagree with you but Im not going to agree with you. 9 times out of 10 youre talking about a kit SCTE which costs around $1000 to build right if you go tekin and a good receiver and servo etc etc. Yeah you can do cheaper and such but from what others have built locally that seems to be the price. So far all Ive done is a STRC LCG Chassis and a new motor ESC on the way. Probably will upgrade to the GTR shocks and just roll with it. Sometimes you just gotta run with what you got.
