what are 1/8 electric buggies missing?
 

I don't know about you but I find that very well overall designed electric buggies are rare. So here is a discussion to make them even better :D

what a good electric 1/8 buggy needs IMO (edit: I added all the propositions):

- an adapted body with room for the lipos and good airflow
- waterproof esc + motor
- composite/ delrin and larger spur gear
- gear protection for the central diff gear
- chassis with no added holes
- rock solid motor mount with 4x M4 screws and the possibility to adjust the mesh very fast
- ability to retire the center diff without touching the motor mount
- battery trays with a variable length and mounting position to adjust weight repartition
- guides for all cables including the sensored wire
- a transponder mount
- higher side guards to keep the wires inside the buggy
- separate mount for the ESC
- soft support for the rear of the motors
- room for an added lipo or CC bec for the servo
- protection for the ESC if it's anywhere near the outside of the car

- limited slip differential/ slipper clutch
- CVDs with boots everywhere
- protected shocks (either with guards or simply rear-mounted)
- independent toe blocks (vs integrated into diff case mold, ala Ofna LX2 fail)
- wing mount backed by the chassis brace, not buy the rear shock tower
- front shock tower/top shock mount protectors (Vorza)
- skids (integrated into bumpers)
- one symmetric arm for all 4 sides
- rigid bumpers with supports (against toe blocks)
- easy access to diffs
- 3 body posts (vs 2)

- hingpin adjusters
- bigger receiver box
- adjustable internal ratio

- easy to swap batteries
- radio with 3 temps sensors and a specific sound for each alarm
- integrated fan mounts for changing them easily
- velcro mount option for the body

- click in battery tray that allows to install it from the side of the car

- lightened chassis


- rubber mounted floating ESC mounts
- 8,4v internal BEC
- ESC harder testings to improve their durability

of course there are cars like tekno eb48 or losi 3.0 that integrate many of these features but I think there's none integrating all of them

please don't hesitate to add your suggestions :)

Some of the neat things I realized with DXR8-e:
- one symmetric arm for all 4 sides
- rigid bumpers with supports (against toe blocks)
- easy access to diffs
- 3 body posts (vs 2)

Going over the top:
Limited-slip differentials

I would like to see the hingpin adjusters like what xray as done. Radio boxes with a tad more room in them. A way to adjust internal gear ratio would be cool too.

Easy to swap batteries. In other words swap batteries without having to mess with connectors.
Radios with 3 temp sensors that make different sounds when they alarm.
Easy fan mounts for motors & ESC where you can also use different fans so you can get all bearing fans instead of the cheap ones that come with ESC or current motor mounts.
Option to use velcro body mounts.
I have to custom do some of these things now but would be nice if I didnt have to.
Great ideas guys lets make it, problem would be to make them fast enough.

this is golden for a brand that wants to design a new e-buggy :p

As someone said easy to swap batterys, lipos could be as the baterrys of the portatil computers, remove two or three clips of the body and click on a battery and go to race!!! That way we could hace 20+ min. Finals or eve an hour like nitros

I want to see a battery tray , that is mechanically held in place in the chassis , and stays Velcro d to the lipo . Instead of changing the "battery" , you swap the "battery and tray" at once , with large wing nuts or something along those lines, or a 'click in " system. Or , hard case lipos with a click in system molded into their cases that click into the chassis directly. One button release

ESC mount or hold down -- something other than the double sided tape.

I'm currently using a velcro strap to keep mine in. Zipties always break on me.

we race 12 hours races in brushless with no problem here (with the same car) but battery trays definitely need improvement

waiting for this since years, really strange no brand sells such a system like on a black&decker tool

For me, a properly designed slipper clutch would be the only item that most of these machines could use badly. We use them on 1/10th for a reason.

Eliminate the center diff with twin, electronically differentiated out runner motors. Would work for braking too. Adjustable traction control on this system too. Both are big opportunities for efficiency. I'm not too big into long races so I can take or leave the battery tray stuff. A better hold down with only one strap or mechanism would be nice.

Better suspension with valving.

I think a quick change battery systems would be great. Running 8 or 10 minute mains is just like every other class on the track. A 45 minute main with the nitros would be much more fun.

I would like to see universals on 1/8th buggies. CVD's are ok for onroad use, but they are a pain for offroad.

I would like to see come company make a motor mount that is similar to the Grid RC design with the offset cam. The sliding mounts that many of the companies use have an inherent flaw. That being that the farther you move the motor out, the weaker the mount gets.

+1 on the battery swap concept. perhaps a design with no cords, just ports that the battery can slide into from the side. Leads plug in like USB, MicroSD etc. would have to be piggyback/square style, so could be slid out horizontally from the side
