SC10 2wd short course gearing
 

Hi guys, I'm new to this stuff, I did a search and came up with a large range of gear ratios so I figured I'd ask.

My son is planning on racing at RC Raceway of Hartville in Ohio, indoor dirt road course. We've just bought stuff that we could afford to get started. I'm wondering if our gearing is in the ballpark.

SC10 2wd
84/20 spur/pinion
Cheap Fuse sensored/sensorless esc
Orion 13.5 sensored brushless motor
JConcepts Subculture tires

I'd also like to start out with the motor timing at a safe setting, do I rotate the endbell clockwise or counter-clockwise to retard the timing? Or should I just start in the center mark?

Thanks, that's all the info that I know so far. My gearing(84/20) is a 4.20, some of the ratios I saw when searching were in the 3.80-4.40 range for modified, and in the 2.88-3.20 range for stock 17.5 motors.

I might have to retire already anyways to put money in my daily driver but if things do get worked out it may be best just to ask the guys at the track what gears I need to start out with.

Your gearing should be a good starting point for running 'blinky' 13.5.

Timing is somewhat complicated with brushless motors. Your best bet to start would be to leave the endbell timing the way it came from the factory and put your ESC in "blinky" mode so it won't apply 'boost' timing.

Also, 20/84 will give you an FDR of 10.4 because the transmission has a 2.6x reduction too.

Ok thanks! I got the motor used so I don't know where the factory had the timing set at. Should I just put it in the middle?

Also, does my Dynamite Fuse esc have 'blinky' mode? I'll try to look it up but I don't remember seeing that in the specs.

All the AE manuals have a suggested starting point for pinions. I've had great luck with that. You shouldn't mess with the timing until you run it and temp it. Then you can adjust from there.
