Default Back into R/C

Hey guys, new member. After a 25 year hiatus from R/C racing Ive just started again. But heres my dilemma, I bought myself a B4.2rs and my 13 year old a sc10rs which we ran and played with joyfully on Christmas morning, but then my 6 year old got involved so now he wants to run cars also. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a cheap car. I tried to find and older hornet or grasshopper etc. on evilbay but wow people must have some beauties out there. I hate to buy him something i cant repair or work on like big box store crap but I dont want to spend a fortune. If anyone can point me in the right direction or maybe has something older let me know. Glad to be back, now if the weather was nicer in WV I would go racing. lol

Get a used (or new) FT B4.2 for yourself, the 13 yr old gets the B4RS and the youngin gets the SC10. With the B5 coming there are great deals available, you've got a 'problem' at an epic time to get it solved

Get another SC10, then you have interchangeable parts. Only thing it really needs is an RPM front bumper, and possibly arms to be builtproof

I would also get him the Slash as it is very tough and awesome in the backyard. You can get 25c lipo for it. The only downside is the brushed motor for longevity. But if you gear it right(18-86 or 19-90), it will last a long time. I get replacement motors for $19 off eBay. After a year od use you can sell the Slash for a $100. With discounts from Tower they are $170 and only need batteries, that only cost $20 each(5000mah 25c) from Value Hobby.

Thanks for the replies, Probably should have bought the F/T when i bought the B4.2 but, after being out for so long i have to buy everything for both of us new again which can be pricey if you have to buy it all at once especially on a fireman's salary lol. I didn't realize the 6 yr old could drive them this well but he does. I try to keep looking for a used rtr for him.

My 5 year old races an SC10 and has yet to break it no matter how hard he tries. The trick is to tone it down using gearing, ESC and radio settings so it isn't too much to handle. Nothing beats having a full fleet of cars that share a ton of parts.

SC10 just needs a RPM front bumper and it's pretty durable

I will also vote SC10 as the down the road cost will be easier because of shared parts. Keep life simple

Kids that age may have a tendency to not be as interested in the racing and more into cars that would be a bit like a monster truck. An affordable hobby grade alternative that is bulletproof and kids LOVE, is a Tamiya Mad Bull. This is a mainly racing forum so most folks are going to suggest something on a more racy platform. My 5 year old has a Mad Bull with a crawler 55t motor and loves it! Here is the one I built for my son:

My 7 year old "races"/beats on an SC10. Replaced his SC10's plastic arms, bumpers, etc... with the RPM parts and it's taken the abuse well.
