I would keep the new esc and go with the xerun 4700kv motor or the new trinity zombie motor. Tenshock is known to have issues with hobbywing esc's.

From my running with the 4500kv Copperhead system in a SCTE, that is quite high in gearing. I normally run 12-14 depending on track. So I can imagine everything got quite hot. The Dean's style connector supplied on the Copperhead should be able to manage regular operation and even some extra heat with no issues. If you changed the plugs at all - might want to verify the solder connections like mentioned before.

What I use for scte

I have the Tekin Pro4hd 4300kv and skyrc toro 120amp esc blue. 12awg wire and 7200mah 60c SMC battery. 16 pinion outdoor and 14 indoor. AKA city block 3 and I really like my setup!
