Based on everyones posts, It seems that if you are a serious racer that changes shock oil 3 time a race weekend the spacer is best and if you are an average joe out to have fun and not tinker, the screws make would be better. Associates engineers could design the car for either but they went with spacers.

The front is a little trickier but with a little design work they could have incorporated the ears in the front hinge pin mount. It really is disappointing. Let’s face it, spacers under the shock piston is a very amateur design. I would rather turn a screw to adjust droop instead of tearing apart a set of shocks in between rounds. That is assuming you have time to do that. With droop being such an important tuning tool, I would think Associated would have made it better for their customers. Don’t get me wrong, I like the car in general, but with just a little effort, it could have been really nice.

Even back then, you bought the aftermarket "tuned" motors, and that's what I'd continue to recommend if you're serious about 17.5. There's a couple companies that build mass produced numbers and can hand pick them for you. Trinity does this with their "certified" line, as does Express as well. I believe R1 wurks does, but I don't have any experience with their stuff.
This place has some great motors too!

I am gonna guess this is your first 1/10th scale build? I say this because we have been adjusting droop with spacers you years and years! Droop screws are an 1/8th scale thing! That is until I got my DESC210, those have droop screws. FWIW in a pinch you can unscrew the shock bottom for quick adjustment.

Default Aftermarket Aluminum Parts

Are the aftermarket parts (Associated or not) worth the money or are they just "bling". Like rear ball mount, hinge pin brace etc?

Or should I just get a good slipper and run the stock build?

Just wondering if there is any advantage to the aftermarket parts besides look?

Rear ball mount for sure, durability upgrade.
Rear hinge pin mounts are more adjustability and durability as well as a lil bling!
Frint hinge pin brace durability and bling

If it is in your budget the only must haves in this kit is the rear ballstud mount and Schelle ceramic gearbox bearings. The rest is optional. Maybe the JC finned turnbuckles would be a good down the road upgrade.

Build the kit to stock. Buy a good slipper and the correct tires for your track. You are 95 percent there IMO. The rest is bling unless you are trying to lighten for stock racing!!
