Im running a Spektrum radio set up, do i need to run a rec batt pack? dose the servo need to be regulated and is the spektrum receiver powerful enough to power it?

Depends on your ESC and how powerful the BEC is in it. For the servo itself, personally it is too much torque. I would find a faster servo for the same price. With racing short course you need 200-250oz-in of torque and ~.10 sec for your transfer time.

The RX8 should be able to handle it, but I'd get a faster servo. That is a great Servo for 1/8th scale, not so much for short course.

Those are great servos, I run the 7955tg in my hpi blitz, and it is very fast and has a lot of torque, that one has metal gears if I am not mistaken, so they r very durable

I know the Losi "team" drivers run the spektrum 6040 servo in the SCTE. I run a Futaba BLS451 and it works great!

I personally have run the 6040 in the SCTE and my 8T, and still do. It is a hell of a servo, super fast.

Savox is 25T and Spektrum is 23T, otherwise they seem to be the same.

A lot less torque and a tad more speed would be my preference. Certainly don't need all that torque. That servo would be great for 1/8 buggy tho.

More torque than you need, and not enough speed.
For the same money I'd recommend the Protek 130s, or for a bit more the radiopost 2207m ($119) or Protek 150s ($129).
