I believe he used a different car at the start, or most of qualifying, or something, no?

I'll sort out some body off pics shortly. I have motor rx and servo buy no esc yet unless someone can help.
In the pic of Masami with all of his cars snd silverware there is what looks to be a CAT in his colours front row second from left.....
....the pic of him in black....see below.....maybe he started with that one? I'll ask him. The car I've recreated is by his right elbow.

From Wikipedia:
In 1987, during a world championship round for the 4WD off-road at Romsey, England, Hirosaka arrived as a privateer with a Schumacher CAT. He shown promise during practice and was brought into attention by Phil Booth, Schumacher's works driver[2] and was provided a longer wheelbase version version called the CAT XL. Despite being near-stock, Hirosaka managed to win the title

To clear up any confusion....my car is a replica of Masami's winning car not the real thing!

It was a great story none the less. He's gone on to be a great ambassador for the hobby.
Did anybody else have the issue of Competition Plus magazine that detailed how to "Pro prep" a Cat? It was a ton of work getting those diffs working well until the solid single rear diff and lay shaft came along.

Yes, fabulous Ambassador. Little things too, even back then Masami-san was known to walk around the track picking up trash before leaving.
Dan, that message is priceless, if me that would be mounted on a plaque or whatever and displayed next to the car. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing.
