On small tracks 13t is more than enough. Otherwise the motor can get very hot.

Will dropping from a 14 to a 13 tooth pinion make a significant difference in temps or should I maybe order a 12t pinion as well?

I went from 15 to 13 and temps in a 6 min heat went from 190's to 150's. On the same type of smaller track. Btw speed was not effected, I think it improved my lap times.

You should be able to get what you need for $300.

Hobbywing SCT-PRO esc $90
A good servo like a hitec 7955 or futaba bls351 $120-150.

Spektrum S6040 is only $70. It is what most of the team uses to steer the SCTE.

well the answer is NO then.
You gave a $300 budget then used $220 of it for an ESC.
Its not difficult to look up prices of parts.
$70 servo and $220 est = $10 for a RX.

You may want to try the whole new setup. What you are describing is the issue with the 2 hole piston setup that we found. And the diff oils we run are very important to locking in the rear end.

Probably. You could get a tenshock motor/ ESC combo for about $150. That would leave you sitting pretty to pick your servo and radio equipment. I run a skyfly gt3b which was about $35 ( radio and rx). Extra rx is about $7. There are lots of choices for adequate servos from $15 to over $100... Folks here seem to be in love with savox 1258tg which costs around $70. I have had decent luck with hitec myself.

I am running 575 diffs with the 2 hole setup, with max kickup everything is the same minus the 4 hole pistons.

max kick will give you more steering out of a corner, this is one reason we moved to the lower kick and the toe settings. Just something you may want to try. The front kick is pretty quick to change (if you have some L pick or something, lol).

The new setup he just put out goes back to 0 all the way around on the front. And just any FYI Maddog, I would try the whole setup. It may or may not have been the setup that tq'ed and won Saturday at the OEOSS...
Granted the same setup doesn't work for everyone, but I was like you, where I "thought" I liked the 2-hole better.... Not anymore

Based on history, I would say that it doesn't matter what you respond with, trust me - these questions are all hypothetical, the path is chosen.

Now that that's said..

OrangeRX DSM2 receivers are $10 from HobbyKing (prob $16 w/ shipping), a bit under $20 on EBay. He mentioned possibly using a Spektrum SR300 which is only DSM and a bit pricier (new and used). So the $300 price point seems achievable.

Making the OrangeRX adjustment, combined with what everyone seems to want to run in this truck, the order would look like this:
$219 RX8 GEN2 (or $180 for a first GEN)
$71 Savox 1258TG or Spektrum 6040 Servo
$20 OrangeRX GR300 RX
will put him right at $310 delivered to his door.
