I have two esc's and two more motors in my spare box just incase new in the box.
The catch is, I'm pretty set on water proof.

Should I just buy the Velineon setup that comes stock in the Slash VXL for $150~pp and be done with it?

It's not a bad setup. It's very fast. You, just have to keep an eye on the temps. They can get hot real fast if you gear wrong. Make sure you get the optional fan for it.

Thanks What sort of gears would be recomended? I had intended to just use what comes stock. Is this a blown motor/esc waiting to happen?

I'll have to hunt around for the fan, it's not included.

That SC8-WP is much stronger and more versatile than the Velineon, I'd go for it.

Righteo, so I shouldn't have any issues with the physical dimensions of the motor? I can't for the life of me find what actually fits the blitz.

I've read I'll need to choose a pinion gear and choosing wrong could burn out my ESC or the motor? Is 19T going to be about right do you think? The spur is 88t.

I never ran one in a Blitz, so I am not sure. The Traxxas trucks with VXL run a 32p spur gear, so it's different. I would check with Traxxas.

The Castle Sidewinder 3 will be waterpoof. that is, if you feel like waiting for it.

The 3656 motor is just a few mm's longer then the 540 cans, diameter is the same, so it will fit well, though I recommend mounting your ESC on the right side of the car for better balance.
Gearing depends on track size, and the kv of the motor you get. With the 4000 I would start at 25T with the 88 spur if it fits.
You have to check your motor and esc temps in the first few minutes, but they should not break a sweat in this light truck.
