Default Checking Engine Temperature

What do you guys use to take engine temperature? Was looking at getting one of those infra-red thermometers, but after reading specs they appear to not work very well on shiney metal. Can anybody recomend anything?

thanks

Where do you guys point the temp gun to when you are checking the engine's temp? Do you guys point it to the side of the glow plug, or directly on top of the glow plug? Is there a difference between the two?
