Hey Scott, glad to see you did the mod! Proffesor, you should look into doing the Traxxas captured ball ends. Honestly, they don't bind at all and now the worry is completely gone. Here's a couple of pix of mine

If I was just running in the street I'd go with the most monstrous motor I could stuff in there. Pro4 4600, Revtech quad magnet 7000kv - something like that
