If your local track is using an AMB/MyLaps system (most do), then yes, it's needed.

Some tracks have "house" transponders for rent, but if you're serious about racing, you'll need one. You can always post a wanted ad in the classified section to save a few $$

I think if you are seriously gonna race not just once in a while then yes they are well worth the money IMO for the hassle they save you from having to give back a house transponder after every heat . And if the track you race at doesn't have house transponders then they have to hand score you and you have to rely on somebody pushing a key on the keyboard to score your laps .

Not to mention AMB/MyLaps is no longer making the house transponders so they are getting pretty scarce so eventually everyone will have to buy a personal .

I think having your own transponder is better because like BashemSmashem said earlier. You have to have somebody hand scoring your race. The problem with hand scoring is if he misses you once or something then that screws up your race and will either mess up your main or your heat, possibly both. I think transponder are good no matter what, but for sure if you race all the time.

Fewer and fewer tracks provide house transponders. I believe that AMB has stopped making the house transponders and even if they were still available, they were very expensive. A personal transponder is highly recommended if you start racing.

Agreed with everyone! It makes it much easier for you, and the race director.
