$199 is a great deal for something of quality that's rtr brand new. You can get something cheaper and with upgrades on the used market, but most likely it will either be beat up (RTR's tend to be owned by people who dont perform the best maintenance) or it wont be RTR and will need additional electronics.

I have bought 3 RTR's out of the classifieds and all were in great, two practically brand new shape. Just pay attention to what you are buying, I will agree you can get a lemon if you aren't careful

Totally agree with you. I wasnt saying That to discourage people from buying in the classifieds, I've bought and sold many things there myself. Like you said, have to pay close attention and check trader ratings etc so you dont get a car that has been cleaned nicely but then turns out the diffs are blown out or something like that. But for 199, an rtr sc10 or xxx sct would be great for his 5 year old.

If you are buying for a 5 year old I would recommend a traxxas slash, My 7 year old started with my old XXX-t that was converted to sc when he was 5, broke alot of stuff during the races and was getting frusterated, I had speed turned down to 50% even, I bought him a slash, he has been racing it and bashing in our yard for 2 years and I have only had to replace the motor on it twice, he has never broken a part on it other than the handles on the side of the chassis. He has learned alot racing his slash and I am just now gonna be putting him in a good race rig now that he has figured out how to let off and actually make it around the turns without crashing...LOL
