Another +1 for the Thunder Tiger. I don't own one but I haven't seen a review putting it down yet. Very very durable.

Standard 17mm wheels fit just fine. The stock rims are standard 1/8th scale as they will fit any truggy

Thunder Tiger is about $60 more, but it has the 150a esc and a better remote. From what I read, the only weak parts are the servo and pins. HPI Truggy is kind of new here in the US and parts are not available yet, but it is a major brand. Decisions...decisions

How about a conversion like the Hot Bodies D8T?

The thunder tiger is great. It is a little bit over your budget (~$550), but all around a great vehicle. Nearly indestuctible and shares lots of parts with the EB-4 buggy. Probably wouldn't be too hard to convert if you decided to race.

Actually I get $50 discount from Tower, it would be $500. That wouldn't be too much over. They don't have it in stock right now. I guess it gives me sometime to think it over.

I would go with whichever you can find parts for at your local hobby shop. Unless you want to order extra parts online. I ran an ofna hyper10 sc and it is not durable at all. Very good race truck though. Not meant for bashing.

I run an electric converted D8T. I like it a lot. I did quite a bit of research before I bought anything, and i have been pleased with the truck for quite a while. It will end up being out of your price range though, because the kit alone is usually about $350 without any electronics. Usually a brushless converison for a truggy will run around $400 in addition to the cost of the vehicle. This will depend on what electronics you use, but is a safe estimate.

I think I'm going with a truggy. Here's a question. I can get the HPI Trophy Truggy for $480 - $50 = $439 at Tower. To do a D8T conversion, it would be $339 - $50 = $289. Then the Techo converstion kit for $135, which is $424 without tires, esc, motor and remote. I can borrow the 120a esc from my Savage, I have some old tires, and I have extra remote, just need motor. The conversion at the end will cost a lot more. Is the D8T that much better? I know I can sell the nitro parts and get some money back.

e-fanatic, the hpi truggy comes with an 80a esc right? That is pretty much the Hobbywing ezrun. The reason I would consider the D8t is that it does come with some better parts such as the shocks. Another reason is I like to build these trucks as much as running them. The same reason I got the Savage Xs SS kit instead of the RTR.

Yeah no doubt you will have a better product building your own as you get to choose the parts you want in it and its always fun to build. I really like the shocks on the d8t too. I just went with the trophy b/c of the price. I'm happy that its holding up as well as it is being its only a $420 rtr truck.

If I go the conversion route, I would just need a motor for now until I get another esc and new tires. So, if I can sell the nitro stuff, it should only be around $400 including the motor.

Someone on the E-Truggy thread posted this conversion for the D8T tcmodels.net. The kit is only $29.

I'm having second thoughts on truggies now. I was searching for tires for bashing and it seems like all the tires for truggies are gear toward racing. Can these truggies, whether I go with HPI or D8T, handle 3.8 MT tires?
