Motor tuning and battery matching
These are two things that I have some questions about. I noticed a tool for motors that looked like a small maching tool to use on electric motors. It looked like it was being used for some onroad cars. Is this something normally done for offroad electrics too? What exactly does this do for performance of the motor?
The next thing is building your own batteries using matched cells. What is the nature of cell "matching", and what specs are used to measure the output of these batteries under a load? Are packs being build out of nickle metal hydride batts. now ? Thanks again. |
I had to double check. It was a comm lathe. I know what a lathe is, and what the comms. on a motor are, but what do you gain from this?

as you run the car the brushes rub against the comm and cause it to wear down so the connection isnt that good. if you cut the motor it gets rid of the grove in the comm created by the brushes and there for a better connection is made

The arching of the electricity and regular friction wears the comm down unevenly and cutting it restores the comm to like new condition. You get less electrical resistance between the brush and comm and therefore more power.
As far as recommendations on cutting the comm, some serious racers do it before every race. I am just a club racer and I only get my comm cut once every 2-3 weeks (8-12 runs) or so. |
