The #1 thing you can do to save money is to maintain your car properly and inspect it after and before each race. A quick once-over with a hex driver and your eyes will help to prevent most breakage.

It's the rule of the 7 P's.

Proper

Planning

Poor
Performance

#2 is anything you're about to do that begins with the phrase "Hold My Beer" or "Watch This," is probably a bad idea, but please be sure to video it for the rest of us.

Bottom line is just be honest with yourself..if your on your lid once a race wich would improve your finishing order more, a hotter motor so you can be faster the next round, or staying off your lid???

BINGO" you hit the nail right on the head"

To back this up I have a short true story that proves your point to a
tee.

I have a friend that races a Kyosho SC and he wins all the time in
stock and mod at one track. He had a trany failure that we had no
parts for, but it so happened it was a day he had just picked up two
new Traxxas Slashs for his boys. So he went out to his car and brought
one in to race. He took it out of the box and ran it (BOX STOCK) tires
radio and all. He TQed and won both classs's with a stock out of the
box Traxxas Slash"

It's all about car control and not crashing, not the latest and greatest
flavor of the month.

Never, ever, ever, pay retail. Look for clean used examples of everything.

There are many alternatives to the popular components.

If it wasn't for hobbypartz/hobbyking and craigslist. I wouldn't be racing or enjoying the hobby to the level I am today.

I'd probably be running 1 class and maybe flying 1 plane.

Due to the fact that I like to tinker, cruise the classifieds, and can recognize a deal when I see one, I can race 3 classes and have a handful of planes to fly.

It's like anything, spend your time and do your homework and reap the rewards. Or, be a doofus.....
