I bought my first RC car back in the early 80's also. I think it was actually a
70's vintage nitro pan car, not sure what the make was. Still have it up in the attic, the radio is a square metal box with two levers. I remember on day running it up at our local Kmart parking lot and it got away form me and at close to 50mph ran underneath an old ladies car that was pulling into the parking lot. I thought for sure she was going to run over it but it went inbetween the front and back tires and proceeded to go all the way to the other side of the parking lot into a huge snowbank. It was pretty damned funny when it went underneath her she slammed on the brakes wondering what all the noise was, " all it had was a straight pipe for an exhaust" she never did see it. LOL... And I wasn't about to admit to being the crazy driver of that damned thing either.

SUPER CHAMP
I began racing R/C in 1983 at the age of 10. My 1st car was the latest and greatest Tamiya Super Champ. It weighed over 5 pounds and pretty much crushed the competition in its field consisting of Hornets, Frogs, Grasshoppers, Pegasus’ and various other vehicle names after insects and mythical creatures. My father and I raced religiously every Sunday at our local track Dirt Power Hobbies in Deer Park, Washington on the Eckhart farm.
This is the closest photo to my car I could find on the web. Note the Oil bottle that feed the mono shock.
As a young racing pioneer in my local area, I later was one of the 1st to get the gold pan RC10, then the Tamiya Fox, and in 1988 the Losi Jrx2.

Futaba FX-10 was my first and my second and third. No idea when I got it but it was before I could drive myself so late 80's. Think I paid $39.99 for it.

FIrst time I drve a hobby grade R/C car was my Dad's Tamyia Rough Rider (painted and detailed up to be exactly like the box) in what I believe was either '82 or '83. My first R/C car of my own was a Grasshopper in '85 and then in '87 my first race worthy car was a Kyosho Optima that my dad only guided me through the build and it had a 15 min. fast charger! It was all down hill from there.

1st Grasshopper 2nd Hornet 3rd Blackfoot 4th Hirobo Alien Mid4
and I also had a JRX2 that I never had the money to build or run.
My dad bought a Marui Samurai and it was broken more then running. It had a metal chain for 4x4 and it sucked up the power. cool design though
I had a few others and my parents sold all of it for $100. I do still have the timer charger though.

My very 1st in the early 80's was a Tamiya Wild Willly, local track actually had a class for them. Added a Frog and ran both for a little while. Then sold them both for a Gold Pan RC 10. Sold the RC 10 to help fund my first car. Just got a new Slash for Christmas and hope to start over in a local Spec class.
