Default Buggy & Stadium Truck: Same tires all around?

Under what conditions would you use the same tire pattern on all four tires on a 2WD buggy or stadium truck? Some tire manufacturers sell fronts to match (some) of their rear patterns.

Last year I ran 2wd SCT and I used the Proline Caliber all around and I was very happy with the results. On the same track this year, with a stadium truck or a buggy, is it a safe bet to run Calibers all around?

When I was a kid we always ran the ribbed tires up front of our buggies and stadium trucks because that was all that was available.

Ordinarily I would just look to see what the fast guys are running but stadium truck is a new class for us this year.

I really want to avoid having to buy a pile of different new tires hoping to find a combination that works.

My skill level is pretty low. I am still working on getting clean laps and consistency. But I have read somewhere that tire and insert selection is something like 90% of the setup equation.

Thanks for any insight!

Generally people run the ribs up front because it gives you more steering and that is an easy adjustment instead of working on the setup to get you a lil more steering. This is what I was told by a really good factory Kyosho racer.

I myself tend to run treads up front. It all depends on your track conditions what to run on the buggy and truck. Check with the local "fast guys" and see what they reccommend...
It is really hard to give reccommendations on a forum like this

But since ST will be a new class for your track that will be hard to get advice on... There are sooo many tires available... I bring 20 to 25 pairs of tires with me when I run ST.. yeah... It all depends on the track, if you run calibers on your sct, then it may be a loose or loamy track then? If thats the case a pair of M3 or M4 bow ties, a pair of calibers perhaps, a pair of edges (ribbed), and maybe even a pair of holeshots to start out with and go from there...

Thanks for the information! I have been out of the hobby for a very long time until this last summer.

My M2 Calibers on both my 17.5 NB Slash and my RC8Be lasted over 10 races with little wear. (!)

Right now I plan to run Double Dees (green) and the Groovy (green) on my 22 and Double Dees (green) and the Carvers (blue) on my 22T. I expect the tires to not last as long but hopefully I will get more traction.

Below are some pictures of our track. It changes a lot over the course of the day. Sometimes you get a qualifier right after the track has been watered and your tires turn to slicks and sometimes the track is like a desert. We ran the last series partly during the summer so we saw a lot of 100F+ days. As the weather cooled down the track got better. Our new series will be a spring and fall series so there should be more persistent moisture in the track.

I have no idea how to describe the track. It isn't very technical but it is lot of fun! We run half of the oval and the infield in a CCW direction.

Many thanks for ideas, help, information or whatever!

Sorry, but if your track surface changes that much, you are going to need a few different tires to work for each condition. From the pics Ribs in the front will be pretty good, they'll dig in and bite in a loosely packed surface whereas pins are better for firm high bite clay.

General rule: on a 2wd vehicle, the front an rear tires should not be the same. They do completely different jobs. That said, it's telling that the hot setup for 2wd SCT and ST often lands on 4 tires all the same. It says that lots of our setup knowledge involves the proverbial "dartboard".
